a short river session

Posted 22-10-2009 at 17:56 by jonnie

took the fly rod out today without the waders, I only had an hour or so and I thought my roll casting could be improved a little anyhow!

I managed a trout and a nice grayling from a fast riffle, both falling to a size 14 black beadhead hares ear. I dropped a couple of fish, one of which was a decent grayling over 2lbs, a bit of a gutter but I'll be back for her mark my words

drawing a blank

Posted 22-10-2009 at 17:44 by jonnie

This monday I fished the aire at silsden bridge, targeting chub with flake and mash. Ive never had much experience with chub but and to my suprise I blanked, putting it down to my lack of knowledge but I will be back! The minnows were still around so I might leave it until the first frosts have cooled everything down to give it another go, I would love to get one!

couldnt have gone much better, my afternoon lectures were cancelled so I decided to quench my thirst for some grayling on the fly.
I grabbed the gear and jumped on the bus, taking plenty of warm gear with me.

I tackled up at the river- I opted for a rolling nymph set up with 2 flies on the leader, 18 inches apart- a leadhead caddis on the point, a very heavy fly, and a lighter goldhead shrimp on the dropper. I started off in a shallow riffle- the water had good pace to...

rubber munching jacks

Posted 02-10-2009 at 16:27 by jonnie

strange title I know but I'll explain in good time.

Fished at dockfield after lectures today, I was going to give it a miss after a heavy night but the weather felt 'right' so I grabbed the gear.

I fished at dockfield just out of shipley, starting off at the basin testing the lures and picked this little jack up over some very shallow silty ground. As you can see from the tail mark either his bigger brother was hungry or a heron had a go, I'm leaning towards the heron...

livebaits producing the goods...

Posted 01-10-2009 at 11:48 by jonnie

third day on the trot for the canal and she was still producing fish well.

Started off the day late from morning lectures again so I chucked the gear together in double quick time and was off on my bike. The plan was to see what I could catch at hirst wood locks.

I set a livebait rig up (designed for pike) and a float rig to see what I could get. First few chucks on the float produced some small gudgeon, so one was lip-hooked on a short single treble trace and fired...
