Sons 18th Birthday Fishing trip
After weeks of fishing the Thames, Jubilee and various canals in the local area and catching small Perch and Roach, my son and I was invited by a friend to go fishing on Sunday, which also happened to be my son’s 18th birthday and his third time fishing. We arrived at the lake around 6.30ish, and all my friend would tell me was that it was privately owned fishery and that it was £10 each for a day’s fishing. Sorry about the vagueness of the location, all I know it was somewhere just north of Aylesbury. On arrival my friend said his normal spot was taken by another angler and we set up a bit further round the bank.
After setting my lad up on a float within minutes he’d landed his first ever fish. A small Perch of about 7 ounces, within the hour, just on the float and red / white maggot between us we’d landed about 10 or so Perch and Bream weighing between 3 OZs and 2lb in weigh. I had a feeling bigger was about to come. By now our fishing group had increased to 4 with the arrival of another friend.
After a morning fishing on the float, we moved round the lake to a spot that my friend liked, and we changed from float to ledger. My son, casted out into the lake and set his rod down. Within maybe ten minutes of him casting out, the tip of his rod began to twitch, seconds later, he was shouting for help as his line raced out across the lake, and the tip thrashed about. My son tried to reel in his first big catch but eventually handed the rod over to our more experienced friend. After a long ten minutes or so battle, in which the rod bent almost double a few times, the fish finally gave up and allowed itself to be landed. Once ashore, the mirror Carp was weighted and photographed. Weighing in at 14lb 10 ounces was it going to be the largest catch of the day. (Caught on Maggot)

Minutes later, after releasing the mirror Carp, it was my turn to watch my rod twitch then the line to take off across the lake. Again another battle and finally a 8lb Common Carp was brought into the landing net. (Caught on maggot)

The rest of the afternoon passed almost without incident. A number of Perch and Bream took our total of fish caught to 35 between my son and me. However just as we were thinking of calling it a day, the fourth member of our team landed a 6lb 6 ounce Mirror Carp, quickly followed by a smaller Common Carp of around 5lb.
However the catch of the day still belonged to my son, as completely solo he landed a second Mirror Carp, weighing 9lb 9 ounces. Taking his day tally to 19 fish caught. (caught on maggot)
(sorry no real good photo)
A good days fishing
