Re: Thank goodness for Carp
The carp in the small commercial I'm taking about the carp run from 6 to 15 lb
Ive seen anglers with carp rods pulling in 6lb carp by just winding in
Personally I use a 1.5 tc rod to fish for carp there, its snag free as long as you keep them out of the reeds
And yes those that learn from mistakes are learning, but some keep on making the same mistakes

Re: Thank goodness for Carp
Its interesting to hear that people think Carp kill their fishing for other species. Maybe the fishing is still there, its just not in the same places as they found it before.
The fact is many of the commercials springing up and stuffed with small Carp are also superb mixed fisheries. I would think that nowadays more people probably have realistic fishing for say 2 pound Roach within reasonable traveling distance from them directly because of Carp!
Trouble is they just don’t want to open their eyes to see it…

Ok, you're right, I should really have written: I don't want to be overly picky. Or perhaps better still: I don't want to be too persnickety.

Very true Philip, it's all about locating the fish of choice; even Boddington reservoir (a 68 acre lake stuffed with tens of thousands of carp) has a healthy head of good roach, as does Clattercote res, also perch, bream and tench of all sizes.
The trouble with many is they are as equally blinkered towards easy fishing as the anglers targeting the numerous carp.

persnickety - what a great word -
other words I like are hohar and brouhaha
Brouhaha is when a hohar escalates

Re: Thank goodness for Carp
Perhaps in an earlier era the choice of bait would have determined the species most likely to be caught. The pools where a better stamp of silvers are now being caught are generally those where all species are accustomed to boilies and pellets and feed accordingly. While not supporting the 3lb test curve rod and 15lb BS line method, the chance of an inexperienced angler being broken by a 6-15 lb carp is pretty slim using this tackle. How many of us have lost hooks when a larger fish has taken a single castor, maggot, hemp seed etc on a size 18 or smaller hook? Happened to me on Sunday so changed to a 16. On commercials I rarely go lighter than 4lb and usually stick to 6lb line not ideal if after roach or rudd but safer for the carp.

That's no doubt true. However, are there no mixed waters you know of that have been lost to carp only syndicates? No carp waters you know of that are having "nuisance" fish removed, supposedly at he request of carpers? No old waters that were excellent, and devoid of carp, that have subsequently had carp stocked changing the nature of the fishing completely and not necessarily for the better? I've seen all three happen and despite liking catching carp and not blaming carp, I don't think it's all for the best.

Spot on - one of the pools at Hamstell fishery was packed with roach , presumably getting fat on the excess carp food , my son had a few 2 pounders out of there, but then they netted them out and it became a carp only pool.
You cannot use a pole on this pool , supposedly because of the size of the carp.
Coppice Lane however has a pool that is mostly silvers with a couple of carp in that no one ever catches , its surrounded by trees and is very mature.
Hardly anyone fishes it though as they all head for the carp pools.
I fish it sometimes in the morning and then switch to the carp pool about 3 when they all come into the margins.
I suspect some multi pool complexes will go this route as well as the forums are crying out for a change from carp.
In truth thats why I used to fish the canal - great fun with a whip for silvers , but its become too much hassle to fish there now.

Looking at the web sites of several coarse fish suppliers, it is noticeable that carp (albeit small carp) are considerably cheaper than tench or crucians and only roach & rudd cost less. If the majority of people fishing commercials want to fish for carp then owners are hardly likely to spend the extra on more expensive stock that very few people want to catch. So far the pools I fish still retain all species .

Re: Thank goodness for Carp
I like carp, tho I rarely fish for them intentionally. No need to as I seem to attract them with just about any bait or method. Yesterday I took 3 lads, keen but new to the sport, to fish a club pond. They were intent on carp. I was continuing my pursuit of a 2lb roach. 30 plus years of angling and I still haven't netted one. Perhaps my skill levels are inadequate. However I have learned to play bigger fish on light tackle. Perhaps as Lord paul recommends I've made enough mistakes in the past to get lucky now. An 11 1/2 pound common on 2.1 lb mainline yesterday.
Personally I regret, and resent a little, club waters being loaded with small carp but it doesn't stop me going. Nor can I imagine a time when I give up.
