if you can catch one of them and chop its head off then stick it on a short stick near your bivvy this should put them off approaching.but even better catch another and do the same thing because as we all "know two heads are better than one".

There is a repelant that you can buy to spray around your swim that they don't seem to like.

Also, don't forget to make sure that all bait if kept in plastic containers with a tight fitting lid.

The same goes for any food left over from meals, put it in plastic bags and then in a container.

We used to have this problem @ our carp lake..is fairly close to rail tracks.
Is cured now, mainly due to rat traps laid throughout the night and keeping the place free from any rubbish/food. They make awful 'divvy mates' ! Must admit - have also resorted to a light and silenced air rifle also !

Get yourself a " mans best friend" in the guise of a Jack Russell. No rat without a death wish will come anywhere near you . We have heaps of there over here so got myself 2 of things .The only problem is that they do not realise they are small ,so anything is fair game from Tractors to Bulls and even Trees that creak in the wind get "attacked "when they are fired up .

Years back on the Darenth big lake, we were sitting chatting when my friends 36" landing net started to move, on inspection there was a huge Black Rat in the net

A house brick was found and the said Rat was despatched even before it could chew through the mesh!

absolutley correct, fish waters without a rubbish problem and you wont have a problem with them, best time to look at new waters is winter when all the undergrowth has died back, if there is rubbish that has been thrown in there during the summer when it cannot be seen dont fish there.

In 1964 I saw 2 boy scouts make a very effective trap from 2 sticks, a large flat stone and a piece of bread paste.
Square-notch a little-finger thick twig about a foot long, in the middle, so that it will snap at the slightest pressure and stick it in the ground at the edge of rough ground. Take a much thinner trigger-stick, about 3" long, and pare it down at one end to fit the notch loosely. Mould some stiff bread on to the other end. Place the fitted end of the trigger into the notch which should be about 4" off the ground. Lay the flat stone with one edge on the ground and the middle on top of the skyward end of the thicker upright twig and lower gently until you feel the notch grip the smaller, horizontal bait/trigger stick. Wait for rat to get hungry and go under the angled stone to get at the bait.
