Re: avoiding rats
In 1964 I saw 2 boy scouts make a very effective trap from 2 sticks, a large flat stone and a piece of bread paste.
Square-notch a little-finger thick twig about a foot long, in the middle, so that it will snap at the slightest pressure and stick it in the ground at the edge of rough ground. Take a much thinner trigger-stick, about 3" long, and pare it down at one end to fit the notch loosely. Mould some stiff bread on to the other end. Place the fitted end of the trigger into the notch which should be about 4" off the ground. Lay the flat stone with one edge on the ground and the middle on top of the skyward end of the thicker upright twig and lower gently until you feel the notch grip the smaller, horizontal bait/trigger stick. Wait for rat to get hungry and go under the angled stone to get at the bait.
