Can you use chod rigs without the putty on your short stiff hooklength?

Yes, but, in my experience, you need some weight in there somewhere. A leadcore leader is one option, where permissable. Another option are little tungsten gizmos. I tend to use Taska Tungsten Swivel Chod Beads. I've also used these and you could make use of these.
