I was fishing yesterday at a nice little lake for tench on the float. I managed, through lack of concentration to see the float go under and not do anything about it, only to see it come back up again!

Anyway, I noticed in the margin, just in front of me, an amount of bubbles rising to the surface. The water was pretty clear and I could see where the bubbles where coming from. They weren't coming from a browsing fish, but were rising up from the lake bed; seemingly from nothing. The lake bed in this particular spot was gravel covered in leaves from the over hanging trees.

I chose this particular swim due the amount of what seemed like bubbles rising to the surface, often meaning the presence of fish. But these bubbles from the lake bed made me think.

Any ideas?

Build up of gas mate. When looking for bubbles you will get 2 kinds on is a string as the fish routes while moving. This will look like a line being placed on the surface. The second is the usuall mass of bubbles all coming from one point.

The difference between these and gas build ups is usually he size and consistancy of the bubbles. Tench fine. Carp a little bigger.

Odd bubbles, or a string of half a dozen small bubbles can either be methane rising naturally from the lake bed, or fish probing the bed and releasing the gas.

A larger patch of small bubbles, which almost seem to fizz as they hit the surface, usually indicate feeding fish. Big patches of bubbles can sometimes be caused by eels.

If the bubbles stop late in the morning, then I think this shows they've been caused by feeding fish - generally on hot sunny days, tench tend to stop feeding late in the morning.

I'm always encouraged if I see bubbles in a tench swim, and I'll cast close to them.

Cheers guys - There was alot of these bubbles coming up from the lake bed so it got quite confusing after a while just which bubbles were which. It turns out that the majority of these bubbles may have been just gas.

At least i've learned something I guess.

Fish bubbles are randon, lake bed bubbles always tend to rise in the same places all the time.
