I like long rods and I keep finding them to be described as bolognese rods or ideal for fishing the bolognese method or style...

But noone ever gets around to explaining or describing just what the bolognese style is or how it is fished and why long rods are needed for it !

Anyone.... ?

using a long rod coupled with a pole rig type set up for trotting at distance in deep water, the first rods were telescopic.

england won a world championship using the method, quite a few years ago which is when everyone wanted to do it. another angling miracle method.

I think Kevin's right regarding the Bologna style.
And like the Cap'n, I can remember back about 16 or 17 years (maybe more) when this method was going to be 'it'.... Apparently! I think the rods used to be about 6 or 7 metres long with a tip ring and a couple of guides on the top section. I think they were generally used with a centre pin reel, attached with the 'Fuji' type reel clips if I'm not mistaken.

It's a style devised by Italian anglers in the northern city of Bologna. It's used on some of the big deep rivers in the region (Emilia Romagna) such as the river Po.

I believe it involves a heavy 20 ft carbon rod, with not many rings, and large floats fished top and bottom.

I only saw one angler fishing when I was in Bologna, but he wasn't fishing Bolognese style - basically his kit was a long length of Tonkin cane, with a piece of string on the end, attached to a large drop net with a lead weight ! It's fishing but not as we know it.
