I put the following thread on 'Tackle and Bait' but had no replies (something I said?):

"Just read an article in CAT by Tony Miles, good read as ever, and it mentions the use of a baiting cone rather than spod.
I've attempted to make one out of a small pop bottle but all I made was a big splash which defeats the object somewhat.
Anyone made one and willing to share the secret?"

I'm normally pretty good at the DIY but I can't seem to get my prototype to unload as described.

Cheers

Tommo

So that secret's out is it? Same as a spod? You're having a laugh aren't you? Spodding make more noise than a gang of drunk hoodlums setting up in the dark after a 24hr session on the lagers! These things are silent and deadly! In short, they are the mutts!
Shame no-one makes a commercial version as they're a right pain in the butt to make - but well worth the effort. The key is sourcing a small cone-shaped container that's strong enough to withstand the rigours of long-range casting. Great piece of kit for tench fishing at range. Essential piece of tackle in my book.

No thoughts there Gav. Maybe I'm thinking about something different, but what I've seen can be stopped in the air above and in front of the spot being baited so that the bait flies silently the extra few yards and the baiting cone lands with an indescrenable splish and then skims back across the water ten times faster than a spod. The ones I've seen are exceptionally good.
I've got nothing to do with reviews and rarely (if ever) fish with a pole, feeder rod or light(er) float rod so I couldn't possibly comment! Those Hearn carp rods reviewed this week are brilliant though. Have some of the old ones (yes, I paid for them!) and the Mk IIs are even better. Well worth the ESP price tag!

Looks like I've opened a can of worms here.

I've got the container, it's just getting the link to release that is getting me.

Not had a chance to fish whole heartedly recently due to an unexpected illness with the wife.

Using the time at the moment to map out as many swims as possible in between the weather you guys have sent us.

Never thought I'd say it but thank god for the French (being inbetween UK and Germany) to soak up the weather.

If the theory is right then Greg is bang on the money with the cone being a silent spod. The other advantage I can see is the wider spread of particles compared to that of a spod. Although the one I like most is the easier retrieve.

Still as I've said earlier I've time on my hands at the moment between visiting hours for some tinkering so I will persevere if it is too much of a secret to divulge blue prints.
