Awesome fish.
There's probably more eel over the rod-caught record out there than any other freshwater fish. I've heard of several over the record caught in traps and nets. Just so few people specifically target them.

(Gu)Estimated by the captors, but sadly the 'experts' have put the weight more like 8-10lbs.

Still an unbelievable fish, but sadly its never going to even get close to getting excepted as a record.

What a lump....not sure I'd want that in a boat with me though. I have to say I'm no eel expert but 10lb-ish looks a fair guess to me. What a beautiful fish.

Some creature, I'd have also thought nearer the 10lb mark but I believe most anglers would struggle to guess the weight of a large eel for the simple fact they are not banked that often.

It looks more like a very long trout to me. Are you sure there hasn't been a mistake?

If you look closely you'll see there are no spots Matt....so it can't possibly be a trout....or a plaice for that matter though I've not done a ray count.

Very impressive pictures, regardless of the claimed weight it is undoubtedly a fish of a lifetime for the captor..well done sir

It's massive and in excellent condition. Could be over 80 years old. Look at it's diameter just behind the head - wouldn't be surprised if it's 12-14 inch circumference at that point. It's certainly 9lb+, could be even bigger!
