Default Fishing yesterday

Two highlights for me .
First I caught a small carp which preceded to tail walk (about a 4 pounder ) .Never seen or heard of it before .Acted just like a pike .

The other was an awe inspiring moment . I saw a Golden Eagle .Yes it was wild and no it definitely wasnt a Buzzard . I had never seen one before but the heart was going nineteen to dozen .What a majestic bird .I for one would love to see them again and a lot more often . I am not in a position to go out and buy an all singing all dancing camera just on the off chance of seeing one again ,however I feel that a camera wouldnt have done it any justice at all .

the last time I was on mull I had a sea Eagle fly about 10 feet over my head... Awesome sight!
People I know that have never been to Scotland always say to me ''are your sure it was not a Buzzard'' when I tell them that I have seen an Eagle, best about it, they probably have never seen a Buzzard!!!!

You're probably right. We have dozens of kites flying over the house and of the hundreds of pictures I've taken of them I still don't have one that I feel deserves credit. It is difficult, but well done on seeing an eagle, perhaps buy some binoculars instead.

Just out of interest Little Oik, where was it you saw the eagle. I believe some do breed in the north of England and are occasionally seen further south. Never seen one myself but, have visited Scotland a few times and have climbed a couple of big hills hoping to see one but, never did. That was around Inverness area but, not the best place to see them I believe. Ospreys are visiting a couple of reservoirs in my area at present right in the south of England, but then they migrate up from Africa.

Golden Eagle Trust | Home

Am living in Eire .They are doing a breeding programme up in Donegal along with very recently Sea Eagles .Needless to say they are under fire from thick farmers etc (taking of Lambs ) I have been meaning to up there to the national park for the last number of years perhaps this will give me a boot up the backside and go and do it ,as it is only about 100 hundred miles away. Although the roads are an absolute joy to drive
I always carry a little monocular with me its only about a 30 perhaps I need to get a better one now !!!!!
As for Ospreys I could have sworn I saw one .It happened so quickly as it flew across the front of the car . That was over on Sheppey during the foot and mouth outbreak .Where they had huge barbies going for days .

yes great when something like that happens.
As for the carp tail walking , I have seen skimmers jump out the water whenever we caught them at Furnace Mill but just on one particular day - no idea why and never seen it happen since.

There are Peregrines nesting in the Clock Tower of Walsall Town Hall which is keeping the pidgeons down anyway.

Last year I was on the bus and saw this huge bird in the sky , in fact at first I thought it was a kids kite at first , but it followed the bus all the way into town , it wasn't a heron it really looked like an eagle. A mate at work who goes to Scotland regularly and watches eagles speculated it was an Osprey ? I have no idea what it was but it was huge.

Because of the nature of my hill walking (high altitude wilderness camping) I have been very lucky to see some really special wild life over the years and have seen all our raptors from the mighty sea eagle through to the tiny hobby. one of the best sights I have seen is of a merlin chasing a dragon fly around a tarn in the lakes, simply an amazing experience!
The red kite used to be as common as magpies a few centuries ago but silly human beings hunted them them to near extinction because they thought they ate their precious game birds! It took along time for them to realise that these wonderfull creatures ate and ONLY ate carrion and nothing else not even a little defenceless pheasant chick!

I read that somewhere once; they used to be common in the streets of London feeding of all the filth that people threw out of their windows, apparently. Maybe they will come back!
