Default 40lb bag of silvers!!!

Had a super days angling on a free estate lake taking just over 40lb of bream, roach and perch on the float. It is a typical lake in that the majority of anglers are carping and mostly sit behind a battery of rods - not surprising really as it does throw up good carp!

I have had some spectacular silver fish angling having recently taken bags of fish of 27lb, 11lb, 10lb as well as specimen perch of 2lb4oz and 2lb7oz.

I have been experimenting with flavours and have found maggots flavoured with Archie Braddocks floral surprise and Van den Eynde 'roach' powder to be particularly effective. It is difficult to draw conclusive evidence that flavours work as there are so many variables, but I am totally sold on the concept. It must help if maggots have additional attraction to help fish find the maggots as they maraud around in the silt and lake bottom detritus.

I wonder how many un-fished (well not coarse fished in a traditional way) are on our doorsteps and have un-tapped silver fish potential. Sure, 4lb bream are bollie munching nuisance fish on 12lb line - but on 1lb14oz hook link beneath a wagler? its a different story

Chav, on Wednesday on a club estate lake after a few hours of catching tench I decided to have a go for some roach. It was a good fish a chuck on plastic hemp on the drop after flavoured baits proved a waste of time as they were taken by the tiddlers before a decent fish could intercept. Horses for courses maybe.

You can't beat a nice day float fishing on an Estate lake, I am very lucky with Hardwick hall being on my doorstep but I have not fished it since the national trust took it on and spoiled a few things!
Anyway, looks like you had a good day Prof, well done mate.

flavoured baits are going to be most effective on the bottom. I have used bait droppers in the past because of concerns that the small fish were hammering the loose feed on the drop but don't seem to bother so much at the moment - there are plenty of flavoured maggots and crushed caster in the ground bait mix.

A little tip that I think works for me anyway: I noticed that when using red and white maggots, a pair of white maggots usually caught a smaller fish, whilst a pair of reds picked out a better quality stamp of fish.

I think I have worked out why.......... I always buy 2 or 3 pints of red maggots and 0.5 pints of whites or flouros. when catapulting loose feed, the white grubs tumbling through the water column are easier for small fish to see and I guess very through make it down.

I reckon your hemp approach would work well on this venue - there are some quality roach..... it is not uncommon for either myself or fishing friend (Rubio - posts on here occasionally) to get amongst a good shoal of roach and bag up on roach between 10 and 14oz with the odd one just reaching the lb mark.
I shall have to give it a go..... Cheers Barbelboi!!!!

Chav, I pinched some Archie Braddocks floral surprise from a friend last week and will give it a go next week.

In respect of the plastic hemp which I have been using with much success on still waters for some years - I tried it, for the first time last week, away from the area I was loose feeding. The result was exactly the same although it could well be, as this was later in the day, that they had been feeding on the free offerings of hemp that been going in elsewhere. It certainly sorts out the better quality roach 'on the drop' also crucians and tincas on the deck and 'rogue' carp just about anywhere.

Will try to dig out some photos for you all (new computer Photos on the old one )
Anybody interested in stick floating a "river" (20ft across ) perfect glides and eddies to boot .Fishing all year round .20 to 40 pounds of Roach in a session. So far roach to just a smidge under the magic 2 pounds .Also the odd hybrid The trout are a pain as they can go to about 6 or 7 and love maggots and casters .

The catch .
In Ireland

I do not fish it that often ,can be a pain to access when wet as boggy ground on the bank .
Anybody interested drop me a line (no Pun intended)

Will try to get some pics up next week of the river and some catches if I can get the old computer to work ,if not you will have to put up with some shots of the river

Jerry, this plastic hemp, are you hooking it directly or hair rigging?
