Default Adding extra butt line-guide for centrepin???

Hi,

Have just bought a carp rod which I will occassionally use for float fishing for big carp, next to or in, snags. I normally use my 1.75lb barbel rod, but clamping down on big carp as soon as I strike, due to snags 'maxes out' the rod and quite a few fish have shaken off.

I want to add an extra butt ring about a foot down from the original butt ring so that I can cast a centrepin more easily (it will provide a more reachable and effective point to pull line from).

My concern is, having measured up, even with a 50mm ring the line will still be deflected slightly when I use a biggish fixed spool reel.

My question is, how much will this slight deflection - thus new lower stress point on the blank - effect the playing action of the rod? Will I lose much leverage on big fish? Also is just twelve inches between rings where line will be loose on casting, likely to cause tangles or restrict long casting with a fixed spool? Would it be a better idea to whip on some kind of small 'hook' to lift the line around when casting, and is redundant at all other times?

The rod is a 2.75lb ESP Paragon, but it feels softer than most 2.5lb thru action rods.

Any opinions or experience would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Malc

That's very difficult to answer, certainly the extra ring will cut casting distance with a fixed spool but impossible to say by how much. As for altering the action of the rod, again I can't say.

However why not compromise - don't whip on the butt ring, mount it using tape or rubber sleeves, that way you can remove it when using a fixed spool and you wont lose any action or casting distance in the rod.

A simpler answer is to learn how to Wallis cast and this will obviate the need for the extra ring.
Depending on where you are you can always come and see me and I will have you proficient in an hour.

Thanks guys, two helpful posts!

Sogster, I think thats much more sensible. I will get some rubber-lined garden hose style clips/clamps and a big, cheap ring for now. Then I can also try with it a fixed spool to see what affect it has.

Cypryphrenia, Yeah I'm long overdue learning the Wallis Cast! Tried it a long time ago, but gave up and opted for the easier-to-learn line holding. There are a couple of issues though, I may have to switch to a heavier float - at first at least. Also, to avoid the loud ratchet I tend to fish with some microdrag in the free running mode. Although, maybe I will still be able to Wallis Cast with a good pull if the microdrag is only on very slightly? I'm in Dorset, but I've had a look at some videos online and I'll just get practicing in the back garden!

Thanks again guys.
