I like to keep it simple. Freeline and no hooklength. Wide gape size ten hook (super-sharp, brand new). lightly soaked dog buiscuit (chum mixer) so the centre is still firmish. Bait on hook (no hair-rig). Only flick it out when a carp is within range and feeding on the loose bits, so you can delicately plop it within a couple of foot. Always be standing ready to cast, so the body doesn't need to move.

With breadflake a hair is fine, as you can conceal the hook.
