I use an old-ish Browning 2¼lbs T/C 13' rod coupled to a Shimano 5010 as I love the clutch/drag on those. I tend to use 6lb or 8lb B/S line and treat it to float, except the last foot or so.

Typically I'll use a flavoured dog biscuit either on a hair or banded to the hook.

I like the extra length of the 13' rod as it helps to pick the line up off of the surface a little quicker than a 12' or 11' rod.

Maver powerlite 11 or 12ft rod
Penn 2000 reel
5 or 6lb mainline (Ultima or Daiwa sensor)
Cork, wine bottle type with a small hole drilled through the middle (end to end), use a darning needle to thread the line through the cork
Tie on a swivel and pull/push it back into the cork creating a bolt rig
12" 6lb 8oz preston reflo hooklink
Band an 11mm trout pellet to the drennan size 14 specialist hook

Depends on where Im fishing.

If its smaller carp then its 6lb line straight through with an avon type rod. Controller to suit distance Im fishing at.

If its biggies then 2lb test 12ft rod, 10lb mainline. 8lb double strength hooklink.

Bread or tesco dog buscuits.

That's another question, do some lines float better than others and if so which do you recommend for both Main and Hook length.

Steph, are you fishing commercial sized carp,or proper carp,if the former,i'd fish 5lb clear mono and freeline a floating pellet/biscuit on a band, the most critical part of floater fishing in my view is feeding small numbers of pellets and only feeding to replace eaten bait,at the beginning it make take several feeds drifting away across the lake to get fish interested, but once you have...wow.The reason for the freeline preference, have both set up and watch, carp dont like floats, simples.

Alan, i used to stalk Carp many moons ago now, and i got a huge buzz out of it.

I never however, for whatever reason, fished for them on the Surface. I would love to know and understand more about surface fishing for carp, size i am not to bothered about, but, the venue would probably have match size Carp and up to 20lb+ carp in it too.

I am just looking to gather info from people with the experience already so i can maximise my chances and minimise money wasted on items not needed.

Steph, Generally if surface fishing I would use a 5-6’ hook length of reflo, or similar – usually .19mm and grease the hook link slightly with Vaseline so that it always remains on the surface. If using a dog biscuit, floating pellet or similar, I make sure that the hook sits underneath with the line coming directly up onto the surface - if the line hangs down a bit before it goes up the carp are much more likely to spook.

I did once, then I discovered candles. A box of Prices candles costs pennies. Tie a swivel to the wick and pull it down into the wax. Hey presto. a controller. A couple of BBs on the wick at the other end and it cocks - or one wrap of lead solder wire. Like PJ, sink the final foot or line and never use Flurocarbon

(two wraps of lead solder wire will make it into a slow sinking weight, perfect for long range fishing as the weeds is dying off in autumn)
