Favourite book...

Probably been done to death, and yet I can't find a thread on people's favourite fishing books. The reason I ask is because I'm after purchasing some new reading material. A few favourites of mine, in no particular order are:

- chub & dace (John bailey)
- the secret carp (Chris Yates)
- king carp waters (Chris ball)
- confessions of a carp fisher (BB)
- a passion for angling (Yates and James)
- the deepening pool (Chris Yates)
- how to fish (Chris Yates)
- out of the blue (you guessed it)

And finally but most certainly not least, as I think it's an excellent book...

- the accidental angler (Charles rangeley Wilson)

I can highly recommend Clive Gammon's 'I Know a Good Place' and Richard Walker's 'Stillwater Angling'. Both dropped off the radar for younger anglers, but essential reading a few years ago and still well worth seeking out.

Mine has to be the original Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing. That had such an influence on me as a kid, wonderful book.

Had to settle for the 1970s orange coloured reprint but, yep, should have mentioned that too!!! Good call.

For sentimental reasons my first angling book birthday present, 'Angling in earnest' (Fred Taylor) 1958. Still in good nick although the dust cover's showing a crease or three.

Fishing with mr crabtree in all waters , theres a copy on my desk and i still love it , my first book. And priced at 7/6p

First place must go to the book that started it all for me, ''My fishing days and fishing ways'', by JW Martin the ''Trent Otter'' 1906. An old book yes, but one that captures everything that is good in angling.
If I may be allowed one more, ''Favourite Swims'' by Fred J Taylor.

First place must go to the book that started it all for me, ''My fishing days and fishing ways'', by JW Martin the ''Trent Otter'' 1906. An old book yes, but one that captures everything that is good in angling.

That's a great read....as is one of my other all time favourites "Trout of the Thames" by Hobbs. Both reprinted by Medlar.

Yates has never bettered Casting at the Sun/The Deepening Pool. IMO he's not even got close to those since.

Not a big fan of the more modern stuff...its missing something in my view.

For books I've bought in the last couple of years I found From Minnows to Marlin By Dave Steuart an interesting read.

PS Dorsetandchub, I would never nominate or recommend Isaac's book, IMO too heavy going and not really an angling book as such - also quite a bit of 'borrowed' from earlier manuscripts.

A great book on fly fishing is called "Curtis Creek Manifesto. Screamingly funny but the author was a world-class alkie and, alas, is no more.

John Gierach's books inc. Sex, Death and Fly Fishing and The View From Rat Lake are wonderful too.

Mr Crabtree reigns supreme though!

Both great books, I really like Rainbows End by Phil Smith. Bream Tales and Tactics by John Bailey and the 2 tench books by Chris Turnbull. My way with chub is also a great read.

Yates - Casting at the Sun. An absolute classic that I really can lose myself in.

Also, Search for Big Chub by Tony Miles and Terry Hearn's titles - all excellent.
