For me it has to be Roach.

I've dabbledwith the Chub and the Carp specialist scene but always seem to return to my first love which is fishing for Roach on a river.

Hunters Moon....I too lived in Bourne End for around 20 years from about 1977 onward. I drove through only last week (I still live fairly close by) and apart from shops changing hands it still looks pretty much the same. I always liked the place as it never pretended to be anything other than a village with ordinary people, unlike the town of Marlow who'd residence (BY NO MEANS ALL) seem to delight in a mild form of snobbishness (if that's the right word) and I've lost count of many I've met who delightin not only saying WHERE they live in Marlow but whether it's marlow 'proper' or not....

Anyway a great little village is Bourne End....just a pity the roach in the local river are, or were so hard to find, at least back in the 80's !!

Roach every time even if the 2lb' er is still some way off judging by my efforts of late.....................................................

They even build cardboard castles in Marlow :D

I love all the species as it gets boring when its one of same every time although Roach seem to be the exception as i seem happy catching them at any size and in any numbers.

For me it has to be Roach.

There is something so very 'right' something so (dare I say it) very 'fishy' and nothing more gentle as a scale perfect Roach, it reigns supreme as my favourite species.

Mind you I wouldn't pass up the opportunity of river 30, the look in those steely eyes is simply mesmerising!

For me it's either the Tench when caught from a quiet stillwater or pristine Roach caught trotting a river or stream.

NB:I hate catching netfulls of stunted Roach though, their magic seems to start once they have reached around 12oz and larger LOL.

I love all fish for different reasons, Tench for their deep green colour, big paddles and red Teddy bear eyes, barbel for their slimline torpedo fighting shape, perch for their rugged firm body and glass paper like skin with their aggressive looks, roach for their beautiful silvery almost perfect uniformly spread scales and red fins. The list goes on and on and whilst sitting in the sunshine compiling this post I'm still trying to edge towards a specific species but can't.

For me it's the fish of more myth and legend than anything else that wears fin's, ''The Pike''. As Mick B points out, ''oh those eyes'', and teeth that cause fear. Strange then to consider it's such a delicate fish, when mishandled or treated badly. I love 'em.

I think part of my response here is based on what I have least access to - you always want what you can't have after all! So it has to be...

Crucian carp. I LOVE a session spent float fishing for these little wonders, they take off like tug boats when you first hook them, there's a moment of confusion - is it a carp? A tench? A big perch maybe? And then they start doing circles under the rod tip and you know who's responsible. I like the fact that they get caught so close in, but they're by no means easy.... and anything over a pound is a really impressive looking fish.

(But if i lived somewhere with 20 lakes stuffed with them all in driving distance I might feel different!)

Although I fish for most species, but will generally target one particular species a session, a large river roach on a stick is still the special one.

PS Re: Marlow – the day they took the weir of the Thames weir ticket 1979ish was indeed a sad day.......

To put my newbie spin in things, a real carp for me not your fat pig bellied still water fatties, but your semi wild narrow, thick backed type carp. Which sadly are coming harder and harder to find. But on the rare occasion you see your rod wrap round and you feel that tug on the end of your rod, you just can't beat it in my eyes! Second to that bit of a different spin but a pure un-hybrid Rudd is another rare and pretty fish!

Chub, in the winter. I enjoy fishing for many species throughout the year and several come close to being my favourite, but nothing excites me more than roving about a freezing river hunting down big, brassy chub :)

Predictably I suppose but it is the pike every time for me. There is something very primitive about old Esox that fascinates and captivates me.

Perch, tench and crucians are runners up!
