I was fishing this way last night and keep the main line tight - I had 3 carp and lost 2 - the tight line didn't seem to bother the carp too much though a couple of time I saw a bow wave move out of the swim so I suspect the line had spooked the carp.

I did try fishing with slack lines but didn't get any bites this way, so the question is, tight or slack lines for margin fishing the method feeder

I use an olivette behind the feeder secured by drennan stops and then try and lay the line up the bank to avoid spooking the fish.

Watch you don't lose your rod for anyone new to this method.

How heavy is your feeder ? Do you think you might be getting bites but they are not registering properly ?

Hi Benny,
What distance do you leave between the feeder and the backlead?
I'm guessing you'd need to leave a space of about the length of the target species if you are to avoid line bites, etc.

Never turn your back on your roof. I was at newton park last night fishing the margin, looked away for literally 3 seconds. Turned back to see my rod disappearing off the platform, I had to dive full length to just grab the butt, the result was a 17lb 4oz mirror. That was float fishing on 4lb line, the fish led me merry dance for five minutes! Apart from that it was all eels, again! Why are there so many down here in the south west, never caught them in Lincolnshire.

Next time try it with a somersault as well for bonus points or a half-pike! :eek:mg:

Well greenie, if we'd had any reason recently to wet the bank that would have been the outcome. A few years ago my mate made the hour trip to the Trent, winter for the barbel. We shared a man cave at the time. imagine my surprise and hilarity when he turned up home again less than 3 hours later having fell in without wetting a line. No spare clothes, drove home in his soggy boxers!

Personally I leave about 3 foot , I must say though it was from advice given to me on here and its been very useful.

THe method feeder was 25g I think

Is that heavy or not I don't know , do you think its enough to self hook them when your line is slack.

Benny - that's the nub of my worry - that the carp were picking up the bait and spitting the hook out before it was set when I had slack lines - with the line tight then the carp feels the hook moves of and the weight of the feeder sets the hook

I fish a 15g method feeder with a slack line and it self hooks fine. Size 12 drennan specialist hook, 8mm hair rigged banded pellet, 8lb daiwa sensor mainline and a 9lb'ish guru n-gauge hook link.

Yesterday i was fishing a match at Toft Carp lake, all i could see in the margin was carp!!!!!it was black with them, but no matter what i tried presentation wise, bait wise etc,i could,nt get a bite...i was pulling my hair out in frustration,.so i took out a method feeder ,to which i have a 2ft 6in length of leadcore attatched, so the feeder is free running, attatched a few feet of 0.24mm line to this ,and put it on a top kit with black hydro, baited it up with a big bunch(10) dead reds on a 16 guru hook put on the GB and dropped it in the margin, held the pole on the grass, within 1 minute, the pole was pulled round, and i landed an 8lb carp,i dropped back in ,same again, this continued till the end of the match,i weighed in 125-12-0,which gave me 4th,but,if i,d have tried it sooner ,i think 2nd was acheivable...Gaz

I do enjoy float fishing , I use a small pole float on running line for margin fishing but there are times when the need to try something diff end is needed and the method feeder n the margins is a good change tactic

Any feeder in the margins always works for me, usually either use a small 15g drennan feeder with groundbait with hemp mixed in with sweetcorn on a size 12 hook. Or if not, couple of swan shots to a 16" hooklength with sweetcorn on the size 12 again, fishing over a light bed of hemp and sweetcorn loose feed. Had carp to upper double figures on both of these tactics.

Only fished float a few times on my local commercial, going up next Wednesday so that should be interesting on the 30 year old 13ft match rod!

Thought of this thread today and tried the feeder in the margins first bit was instant - a decent carp , second bite had to wait about a minute BAM !
Couldn't get it to work after that so switched to float - no idea why.

I much prefer to use a float in the margins and cannot really see how a method feeder would give an advantage. Why or when would you choose a method over the float for margin fishing?
