I have a Reuben Heaton Tubular Spring Balance like this:

Spring Balance

Had them for a few years, no probs. But now the spring appears to have 'seized' and I struggle to turn the knob to zero the scales.

Is there an easy fix? Or is it just one of those things and time for a new set? Thanks.

I've got two Reuben Heaton spring balances, similar to yours but shorter. I found zeroing the scales wasn't reliable, as the screw seemed too loose to maintain the setting.

I don't think it's worth getting yours repaired.

I've used these digital scales for two years.

They are light and fit in your pocket. One drawback with the one I have is that the weight, in lbs, doesn't include ounces as a subdivision. For example a fish weighing 4lb 3oz will actually show 4.19 lbs on the scales. I've got used to it.

i would get new scales if your having problems with ,might not read true weight of the fish.
get the next model up the flyweight mk2 are a good set to have nice and slim and come in a pouch around £20 .
i have the 12lb model 1/2oz divisions and the 40lb model 1 oz divisions as well
use the 12lb ones all the time and get out the 40lb one if get a big one.

Thanks for your help.

Excellent article here by Duncan Charman re: weighing fish.

(bit OTT for me but very informative)
