Hi all, just a quick question, I was given a spirit specialist advanced float rod, 1lb 2 oz amongst other items, do you think this is adequate for fishing canals targeting silverfish and maybe an accasionally biggie!
Thank you
Martin

It is more than capable for what you describe, it is quite powerful for its stated test curve and has a fairly through action. I have had some very decent fish including double figure carp and decent tench and it has coped well.

I think it'll be a bit of overkill for the average canal silverfishing, but it'll be excellent when the bonus fish turn up. I have a couple of the even heavier 1lb 6oz versions, which are the most powerful genuine float rods (with a proper float rod action) that I've ever encountered. I use them for double figure stillwater carp and barbel on the river. Initially, when a fair number of the carp I was fishing for were sub 10lb, I felt that they were a little too brutal, the 1lb 2oz rods would have been better. However, I've found them to be surprisingly good for the inevitable smaller fish (trout, grayling, chub and even decent dace) that pop up on a fast flowing river, provided I'm fairly gentle with the smaller ones.

Thank you all for your comments, would a set of Korum CS 11 foot be any better?
Thanks
Martin

I doubt it, I don't usually comment on gear I have never used but going by the spec they are designed for commercial carp waters and may be a bit beefy too. What you need for silver fish is a match type rod, the Drennan Floatmaster is good but I think it has now been discontinued. There are many other good rods from the Drennan stable that would suit your needs.

Thanks again for your comments, I will take a trip to Fosters in Birmingham and have a look at the Drennan 13ft silverfish rod and maybe Drennan FD 3000 reel, they look like a good combination. Any other comments or recommendations gratefully received

I've got the 11ft Korum float rod mentioned previously. I bought it specifically for roach fishing on the Kennet & Avon Canal, it a really nice rod for this purpose with a soft action. I have tested the test curve and it is around 14ozs, it casts a small 15g flat bed feeder with no issues. Nice rod for crucians as well. Hope this helps.
