Do you make them up at home ready for action or at the waterside? I have made up about 6 to use wth some Gardner leads designed for them. These were recommended by Robtherake and have a rubber o ring which fits into a groove at the bottom of the lead and secures the bag.

Can you use them for maggots?

You can put what you like in them as long as it's dry. I can't see the point of clipping a bag to a lead though? I'd just use a method feeder or a cage.
There is a method using PVA mesh called the ' teabag ' generally used for micropellets where you push a baiting needle through the bag then hook the loop on your hooklink and pull it through, this way the feed is right close to your baited hook.

Obviously you need to use a quick change bead as above ( Drennan) I'm using a 1oz lead here. This set up allows me to cast a lot further than with a feeder.
