Default Why are anglers and certain types of tackle - "Pigeon Holed"

This thread started with me buying Angling Times today. Not because there is a free spool of line on it but maybe there are a few articles I might want to read.

But I would like to ask a question.

Why does it say on the spool of 8lbs line - "Feeder Fishing Line?"

Actually I just might use the line for chub fishing, or even barbel fishing, or perhaps bream fishing on the Trent. I might never use it for catching feeders at all. So why call it a silly name?

But generally there is too much pigeon holing in angling. Some people are called "specialist anglers" when in actual fact they do not specialise in anything. This year I have caught something like 30 species of fish using a whole variety of methods in two countries in both fresh and salt water. What sort of angler am I?

Where am I to get pigeon holed?

I really wish that the angling media, and it does seem to be the angling media that does it, would stop this bloody silly pigeon holing.

Don't you?

Why pigeons Ron? What's wrong with sparrows, terns or hummingbirds?
After all, there's thousands of avian species , do we,as anglers have to be lumped in with one that, in urban conurbations at least are mite infested vermin.

Interesting thread! Yea I agree totally, it’s mad, but splitting everything up in to individual niches makes more money I suppose. As for angling media, what is that really? Isn’t it just an industry puppet? Full of how to do’s loaded with obvious and not so obvious advertisements, forming clans with different identities, pedaling the accessories.

“Generally” speaking you pick your target and then you buy your wheel barrow full of unnecessary paraphernalia, it’s all accessories instead of grass roots knowledge, all laid on and organized for you, bream rods for your bream etc…. Be it a Barder or a bait boat, there’s no difference, instant anglers, you can buy your sport, and to add insult to injury a lot of end tackle these days does the fishing for you… But on the flip side there must be lot of perplexed guys of a weekend staring down at a row of Fux alarms wondering why they aren’t getting a bite, blue print angling, follow the leader, chuck it and chance it, mind you they look the part… fishing by numbers…

And don’t get me started on the Abu Cardinal wielding, Mr. clean cork, fat wallet, I read Waterlog brigade!

Partly in jest of course!

I don't know why the term 'Dodo holed' has fallen into disuse this century?

Ron there was a choice of 3 different lines types on the front covers of Angling Times last week.

I opted for 6 lb 'Envy' , I could have taken 4 lb 'Redi'; of course you chose to pigeon-hole yourself as an 8 lb 'Sneak'.

Cool Pidgeon holes and rods

I have a very fine Mog Morgan 'salmon' spinning rod. Which I use annually in Scotland. On other occasions I use it when spinning for pike. At which it performes very well.
What's the difference?

It's all advertising gibberish for .. you need different this or that for each different style of fishing and target species... making those who follow blindly, purchase more than they need.

The 6lb free line was also labled feeder fishing,I took that with a pinch of salt but it has to be said it has very little stretch and without having used it looks very suitable for feeder fishing .
