I cant get my head around anyone wanting to kill a defenceless animal just for fun,its just barbaric in the 21st century, if a fox is a pest shoot it for that reason not for pleasure.

Perhaps we are closer to the fox than we realise?....ever seen a fowl pen after one of their visits? humans have these traits too, perhaps we need a release?.......i'm just not sentimental, nature is far crueler than any fox hunt.

At last a thread of views on this thorny issue with which I agree.
Having grown up in the country I have absolutely no problem with "hunting" as in shooting animals for food or to control numbers. This would apply to rabbits, deer, pigeons, mink or even foxes. I have a big problem with chasing a terrified animal halfway across the county and ripping it to bits with a pack of slavering hounds. I seem to remember a quote about "the unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible", which just about says it all (Oscar Wilde).
The CA and its supporters within angling keep on about "sticking together" and "supporting each other against a threat to our common cause". What common cause? I respect what I attempt to catch, and even if I wanted to eat it I would want to despatch it as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Once a desicion is made on hunting with hounds the CA will lose all interest in us, as we will no longer be of any use to them. Better to stand on our own two feet now, and defend ourselves on our own terms, pointing out our environmental strengths, and dissociating ourselves from barbarism and arrogance.

(Few, that got that off my chest! )

Paul I agree that nature is cruel, but the things animals do is done purely on instinct and for food, we as humans are top of the food chain and masters of this planet and SHOULD be above such blood lusts. You say a fox makes a mess of its prey, but I bet it does not sit around with other foxes in nice jackets drinking pimms before going off for some jolly good sport. Angling should condemn the C.A not join it.

By the way did you know that worthy organisations such as the ACA are supporters of the CA?

I feel that all sides of any political argument are flawed. I have a deep mistrust of anything political.
The CAA people are a bunch of toffs who want to use us to support their cause. So I will not be giong on their march.
The 'lefties' are control freaks who would like to ban everything.
As for the environmental lobby. English Nature are a total pain in the arse and a load on interfering idiots who like to dictate what people do on their own property.
I am a member of the ACA but am not happy with their support for the CAA.
I think I will continue to treat all things political with total contempt and just enjoy myself catching a few fish, hopefully.

For many years I owned and rode horses, it was assumed by the Fox Hunting fraternity that I was naturally supportive of their cause being an angler as well. However, I didn’t hunt but mistakenly supported their right to practice their sport, that was until I became involved in rights of ways, mainly bridleways and unclassified county roads etc. By God how their attitude changed, when I asked these landowners to remove obstructions on legal rights of ways, can’t be having the likes of you just wandering across our land they said. Like many of you have already said, Angling must stand on it’s own feet well away form the Countryside Alliance.
