hi folks, dug up a wasp's nest this evening. Want to fish with it tomorrow on a small river. Obviously, I can hook the grubs, but are there other ways to fish this bait?

Break off sections of 6 -8 cells and fish it on a size 8 hook. Great chub bait. You can also break up the cake, soak it with boiling water and add it to a crumb mix for groundbait.

I'm sure everything is a good bait for chub!

Like that gut bucket you're holding and its kin are selective feeders right? )

Noy sure wot last msg was about Dave, but thenks for the advice. Unfortunately, cake was too dry/crumbly for hookbait. Caught some beauties on the grubs though!!

Good on yer Nick. I'm not surprised about the cake. Nests are not that good at this time of year. They are best in July, early August, when they have not long been built.

Nick how did you fish the grubs?

I've never tried the wasp grub/cake before. I remember reading about it ages ago in the anglers mail when I was a kid.

Did you not get attacked by a swarm of wasps?

Quite easy, Andrew, £3 for some wasp nest powder from the hardware shop. Squirt liberally around entrance to nest preferably in the evening when they're all at home (otherwise they just go off somewhere else and build another nest!!). You can wait till morning, or if you're impatient a couple of hours, then carefully dig it out. What you get are layers of fragile honeycomb; seperate the layers and remove any adults and off you go. I just broke the nets up into hand size pieces and put in a bait box, hooking the grubs straight from the honeycomb wihtout touching them. They are a lot more delicate than maggots, fatter, and juicier! I was fishing with a bunch on a size 8 hook, so I didn't have to change hooksize for meat (who said I was lazy!!). Was getting a bite a cast, compared to longish waits on the meat. Even hit some of them! I was fishing a small, low river, so single SSG weight was all I needed on the line.
Hope this helps.

Nick

Here's an article about collecting and fishing wasp grubs and wasp cake:

because the grubs easily burst you can also super glue them to the hook, are you can make them into a bulk bait, i have found this way better, you dont lose as many when hooking them.
as for this time of year you will find the nests are now full of queensand they are big baits
