Buzzers?

One point I have never been able to fathom is why UK anglers call the pupa of the chronomid (midge) a "buzzer"?

I have held my ears as close as possible to these things and never heard them buzz yet!!

Why don't UK anglers call them what they are, ie midge pupae?

Hi Ron, one evening while fishing on lough Owel in Ireland during a huge hatch of green midge I could hear a really loud buzz in the air. I said to my self every time a midge hit me in tha ear now I know why they're called buzzers. So as far as I know the adult is called a buzzer and the pupa is "buzzer pupa" shortened through common use to just buzzer.

Probably because they are from the same genetic stock Delkimus Warbelus....!

Hi Ron, I'd agree with Fergal - it's not the noise a single insect makes, but a swarm of 'em! Though maybe 'hummers' would be a more phonetically apt name.
