60,000 rainbow trout escape into Hampshire Avon

There's been a right cock-up on the Avon so whether you want to fill the freezer with dead-baits or dinners - this is where to be. At the time of posting this article, the source of these escapees is not known but there can't be many options can there?

It seems form local reports that this occurred well downstream of Ringwood so hopefully my local fishing will not be impacted too greatly.

Andy Brown (Avon angling) is said to have caught over 50 in a very short time while fishing, and Andy does do most of his fishing well downstream of Ringwood . . . .

For those who are interested in this simple form of fishing then it must be a bonus, personally, I'll avoid the area for a good while to come.

I think there is a lot left to be said, and understood on this topic . . . . . as such a release of such a number can only have a detrimental effect on the local fishing.

Remember, this is an iconic fishing area with some great angling history connected to it.

PS: I also just read that the EA are advising all anglers, not to return any of the trout that are caught . . . . .

I was going to say - there are no trout farms south of Ringwood that I know of, so unlikely to have been a release of rainbows from there.

Bicton trout farm is the usual suspect and we used to feel the effects at Somerley but there are trout farms north of there as well. As well as having regular mass escapes they also degrade water quality.
