With the general election now likely to take place as drought conditions threaten parts of the South East of England, a cross party group of MPs headed by former Environment Minister Richard Benyon, and backed by farming and wildlife groups, has called for a complete overhaul of the UK's outdated water abstraction regime.

"Left the river running dry" who came up with that gem? a river with no water in it is a path.

Farmers involved mmmm maybe they should stop abstracting water and concentrate on not polluting whats left with run off form their fields.

An MP that belongs to the party that sold our water off cheaply, how much water do private water companies abstract? why are they not at the table? Couldn't be any ulterior motive in the timing of this could there?

The rivers I fish never dry out, they have big sluice gates at the sea end that are kept closed in dry spells and opened when it rains a lot. The levels are generally kept the same drought or floods. Why can't they do this to more rivers? Does the Colne flow out into the Thames, why not a sluice gate where it flows in or is this not possible?
