Theres also of course venue best to take into account.
One of the small lakes I fish has some lovely old dark carp in it.
They do'nt go much bigger than 14 or 15lbs so a double figure fish from there is a very worthwhile fish.
A 13 pounder would not be my PB but it would be a real acheivement. It is very rare for these fish to fall to 'trap' techniques and they must be stalked with stealth and guile and of course a little luck.

Sounds like I am talking about carp fishing in the 60s but thats what its like, no regular stockings just a few natural fish.

Walker's ethos was spot on and I wish that today's anglers would follow his creed. I would add to Walker's ideals, the following, which applies to coarse fishing of course.

"Leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photographs".

I don't know exactly who coined this phrase but it may have been someone writing of the wilderness areas of Africa.

My friend Lee Swords has been writing recently of what he would do to litter louts. The interesting thing regarding these litter pigs is that these days they seem part of what is termed, "specialist anglers". In the days of the formation of the specimen groups we had a strict code that included membership of the ACA and never once leaving litter. In fact we used to clean up any litter left by other anglers.

How things have changed.

Problem is catching those who leave the litter Ron, and I have today :)

Well not exactly the name/person but I have a mobile number, The stupid B left a takeaway receipt with their telephone number inside a bag of rubbish.

Instructions on the receipt were to telephone when at the water and he/she would collect from the locked gate.

The guy/woman is in for a hell of a shock tomorrow :D

It would be a lie to say that iam not impressed by big fish and i do seek to catch them, as a "big fish" is such an impressive creature. Take perch for example you catch literley thousands of small ones and then the big one comes along and it blows your mind it dosent look right/real or possible that a perch could get to this size. The trouble is big fish are addictive and once you catch one you wont more and more, some are happy to go on like this where other anglers will inevitably get "burned out". Without sounding big headed ive managed to catch most coarse fish too a good size and now i find that im seeking the challenge of using new and different methods/species to get the buzz. This last year ive been learning to fish with the pin and it has been a pleasure to sit and floatfish for whatever comes along rather than sitting blanking behind buzzers, i will still continue to angle for big fish but i feel much more relaxed about it now, and when the blanks pile up its a pleasure to go and float fish for whatever comes along. :w
