Nylon Techie Question

Strange question I know (work related. I'm afraid) but does anyone out there know the safe upper operating temperature of nylon fishing line, (before it melts, obviously!) in degrees F or C

Any help much appreciated

Kevin - I don't know the answer to your question but it may help to browse around the articles on heat shrink tube. The steam shrink variety is designed to shrink beneath the melting point of mono and adverts or articles on the topic may give you some indication. Lines of course could vary.

Nylon is ok up to the "glass transition" temperature. Can't remember what this is exacxtly, but its well over 100 C. After that the properties change and much of the tensile strength and creep resistance goes.

Just read an artical kevin that indicates that nylon line has quite a low melting point - just over 150 deg.C

Am I right in remembering that "superbraids" (Polyethylene) weaken at much lower temperatures than nylon ?

I believe it matters so much that you shouldn't even run a 'braid through a rag under much pressure when loading a reel as it gets friction-heated.
