Hi,

I'm after a couple of books covering two areas and wondered if I could get some suggestions...

Firstly I'd like a useful text on the subject of locating fish. Bearing in mind I am a relative novice I'm keen to learn more about the habits and habitats of general coarse fish.

With a holiday looming I'm also interested in finding a good fishing related book to take with me. Biography/Fiction ideally. I've read Jeremy Paxman's collection, a couple of John Gierach etc. Ideally I'd like something coarse based that I can lose myself in but potentially learn from (but not a text book).

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Chris

If you can locate a copy try "The Anglers Bedside Book".
Full of short stories and experiences from the likes of Walker,Fred J Taylor,Venables etc. It covers all sorts of disciplines and can be read over again.

Thanks for those recommendations.

I'm particularly interested in finding a good book with coverage of where fish can be found (typically). I'm conscious that being able to read a water, be that river or still-water, is a key skill I need to develop. So I'd like to find something that covers where different species tend to be found, perhaps at different times of the year/day etc. to improve my chances.

Any suggestions in that aspect?

On watercraft,

An American book, What Fish Don't Want you to Know, Frank Baron.

As a general read,

Casting at the Sun, Chris Yates.

From Minnows to Marlin, Dave Steuart, or Angling, by the same author.

I'd suggest one of Chris Yates books, depends on your 'angle on angling'

Half way through the Lost diary however How to fish is an easy read and probably better for a sunlounger 'falling in again' which is a collection of short annecdote/stories.

Stillwater angling Richard Walker - much of his thinking never went out of fashion, I've had mine 37 years and still read it annually. Bloodknots by Luke Jennings is a great read if you want non-instructional.

first published.

This is an interesting volume: Catching Fish: Knowing Their Feeding Habits

Authored by the late Richard Walker.

Copies available on Ebay for a paltry £2.99!

Gah! No Bernard Venables...! Ok, Mr Crabtree and anything with illustrations by David Carl Forbes, so that's pre-1975 and if you want real instruction, Trefor West's barbel books, Chris Turnbull's Tench books...

Another vote for John Bailey's Fishing Detective, a great book. For something a bit different, Blood Knots by Luke Jennings is superb.

I have a good selection of Medlar press books and love reading them, especially the couple by BB.
A recent purchase I like is ''Practical Barbel Fishing'' by Graham Marsden, a brilliant and very informative read!
