hi John
have you been into Harrisons lately the last time i went in the shop had nothing in it just some bait the odd pack of hooks and the display shelf in the middle of the shop was full of bait boxes over 200+ & tackle catalogs .it's gone to mail order shop

Oh... I get my maggots from there every now and again in bulk to freeze.

I have not been in for a couple of months but last time I visited I bought a catapult and some bits. Things must have changed.

I try and use the tackle shop when I can.

If they have what I want at a price reasonably lose to what it costs online they get the deal.

If they can't get it, or a significantly more expensive I will buy online.

I am pretty lucky as I have a decent shop just 5 mins walk from my house.

I consider my local tackle shop owner a friend. When the stars align, we fish together. This has been the case for over twenty years. However, he happily admits that he can't stock the kind of major tackle items (top end rods/reels/poles etc) that we both buy. It would bankrupt him to do so. Despite being able to buy stuff at trade, he can often get top end gear for less than his trade price from the big retail players.

He has no desire to ruin his business, so sticks to budget gear, terminal tackle and bait but supplements his stock with any really good trade offers he gets. He knows full well he's not going to compete, so doesn't even try.

Use it or lose it may have an element of truth. However, a failing business can't be blamed on the (potential) customers.

Both. Most small items, including bait, are bought from my local shop, but I also give them chance to match any advertised price and if they do, they get the business. They get the deal about 8 times out of 10 and of the remainder, it's usually that they can't get hold of the item, rather than having a problem matching the price. Sometimes the wait is longer - it's a relatively small concern and requests get added to the main weekly order, but that's no real problem.

Both online and at the local shop. I have bought rods and stuff from the U.K as even with mailing rates its still cheaper and coarse equipment is none existent over here. Fly rods and reels in Australia are ridiculously expensive.
Local shop is pretty well stocked and prices are quite decent , one young guy is really helpful the 2 older ones are offhand . Always spend $30-40 when I go there but if brick's and mortar shops are struggling I think that sometimes the "internet is killing my business" excuse can cover up some ordinary behaviours in retail outlets. To be honest the local shop has missed out on a few sales when I have been ignored or greeted like an inconvenience , it might not have been much at the time but it influences me when I am looking at buying bigger ticket items.
I don't mind paying a little bit more for shopping locally and I like the idea of having local tackle shop but i have an aversion to bad customer service and i tend to take my business elsewhere if get bad service regardless if it's retail or online.

That's interesting about PayPal. I found the opposite. I was lied to by someone called Burtree Angling. They had no intention of sending the goods. They lied and said it had been despatched several times.
PayPal refunded me immediately.

Woody's Angling Centre, Hereford for me as I can get hold of most things I need there and then and it will hopefully help to keep the shop trading.

I'll go where there are deals.... I have to be pragmatic... Cash is often tight and though I'd like to support my local tackle shops, the vast majority charge a lot more for gear than their online counterparts....

Now, you might be forgiven for accusing me of helping to push the shops under, but temper your initial reactions with the thought that most, if not all shops, now have an "Online Facility" I know my local branch of Angling Direct does, so where does that leave us.... Well I found that Angling Direct's prices were approx 10% more instore than online and the same applies to some other shops... so they are effectively making a rod for their own backs (sic)

a good example was, my wife bought me a Drennan Red Range Carp Pole for Christmas, I enquired about spare top two's.... Yes they said, we can get them, they are £29.99.... plus £15 P&P... EACH...

Now frankly that's taking the P!$$

So with an attitude like that was it any wonder that I went to Benwick sports and ordered 3 top twos and a cupping kit at £29.99 each plus P&P (£6.99) for the lot...?

I still go to the shop for bait and small consumables, but for larger items I'll shop online unless the shop can compete.

Tackle companies can't have it all their own way... if they want folk to use the shops then charge the same as online outlets.... TBH I feel that bleating about falling sales whilst maintaining an online mail order company smacks of hypocrisy... they can't have it both ways

Tackle shop, I'm lucky there's a really good one right next to where I fish, wich is about a five minute drive from where I live, dangerous for the bank balance though

At Revels lakes, there's also a tackle shop. Jason always offers to match any internet price if you order from him. Not sure if he always gets a good margin, but hats off for trying his best to keep custmers happy.
