I guess we have all seen it....the Ray Mears type survival expert advising people to pack a bit of line and a fishing hook into your survival kit.

Whenever i see this the angler in me can't help but think "just one?" ...and then i start wondering what line and hook it should be. I dont want a bit of line too weak or i will snap it too easily, but not too thick either else i might not catch any fish. Same for the hook, not too big, not too small.

Go on then, if your limited to just one breaking strain and one size hook to try and cover any situation you might find yourself in following that unforseen plane crash, what would it be?

...& for the record, i've settled on size 6 hook and 8lb line :D

4.4lb line (Drennan Floatfish) and a Kamasan B911 size 14. I've caught tiny Roachlets and Carp up to 15lb on this setup.

I must admit but I don't travel with it while flying, however in the mountains 6lb and a 12, another thing that makes things a lot easier is an ssg, you can get round it but it's very handy.

if I could only choose one size of hook and one spool of line then my choice would probably be a pack of Size 8 semi barbed hooks plus some 6lb line.

I would probably choose braided over mono in that case (usually I use braided for lure fishing and mono for float fishing). Diameter could be maintained smaller, but breaking strain would be better compared to mono, the only problem being perhaps abrasion resisting. Maybe something around 0.16-0.20mm (we use that scale here rather than breaking point) as they would fit most scenarios from small shiners to larger predators.

I think we're all overlooking the main issue here and instead should be discussing how we're going to fold the unhooking mat so that it fits in the tin :p

Survival?!? I'm not putting my life and death on the line to 6lb line thank you!!

I would probably go for a size 1 or 2 hook and some 20lb braid. And then I'm going to let every single fish swallow that hook all the way down.

When it comes to survival, I'm afraid it's catching not fishing that counts!

(and on a slightly less facetious note, worth bearing in mind that in a survival situation, it's probably more likely to be the sea that's providing your meals, hence upping the line strength a bit...)

Thinking survival I would go for 50lb braid and a crossbow.
I know that would contravene your rules but I brake rules on a daily basis when I fish, survival anything goes.

If a hand line depended on my survival. I would use 80lb braid with 7 strand wire hook link and size 6 hook. The line is well over that i would in a daily fishing sea or course fishing session. As i wouldn't know what was in the water, i would like a better chance of dragging a fishing.

Good stuff gentlemen

Think I’ll send a mail to Ray Mears and Brear Grylls to say that after careful consideration and extensive deliberation the members of the Fishingmagic specialist angling web site recommend your overly vague & misleading advice of “take some fishing line and a hook” is amended to...”take spools of line ranging from 4.4lb Drennan Float fish to 80lb braid, hooks from a Size 14 Kamasan B911 to a size 1 Conger, an unhooking mat, bedchair, gaff, crossbow and of course a whistle”

And they call themselves survival experts ? Pah ! ..I recon they owe us big time.
