Default why do some match anglers pack in before the end of the match?

I've noticed a few times that one or two anglers will pack up well before the end of a match (not team events but individual opens)

just because you're not going to win why pack up - surely you enjoy fishing, and what if in the last hour you catch a few big carp and end up near the winning weight?

I'm not ahving a go at match anglers - just curious was to why

I should imagine, that for most Match anglers it is about the competition, so yes, it is about the winning.
If they have no chance of winning then they may as well call it a day.
A bit like football fans that leave before the end of the match because their team are 3 - 0 down with 10 mins to go.

I think that to be a successful Match Angler you may have to think less about fishing and more about catching .... i could be wrong though.

As much as I used to love my match fishing, I've had too many pegs on "cyanide straight" where you know that no matter how hard you try, you're not going to catch anything (or anything worth counting). Sometimes the fun is lost when you're not catching so we pack up early and think it'll be better next time. Then there is the very rare occasion when you feels as though you just can't be bothered carying on to the end for no reward (of whatever kind).

It's a similar mentality to those so called football supporters that can be seen leaving their seats in droves at half time because their glass is half empty and they think it's all over!

Mind you, when a seal popped up in my swim on a match on the Witham so years ago I got the answer to why my swim was dead! Yet I still fished on (after others left for the pub), caught a few boot laces and came third. I was 16 at the time so not drawn by the nice warm pub.

there ahve been times (not many thank gos) when I played rugby that my team were 30 points down in the last 10 minutes with the rain pouring down and freezing cold - and the ref would sometimes ask the loosing captain " 10 minutes left - shall I blow for full time now?" - we always said no - and once (only once) I remeber we staged a late come back and won by a couple of points ( but I think the ref added a few minutes on to the time when he saw us score a quick few tries and wanted to see if we could do it
