I recently purhased a Fox Elite spin 8ft 6" spinning rod and I have to say I am really chuffed with it.Its rated a very useful 30 - 90g but it feels a little lighter, It happily throws Big S and Mepps 4 spinner but struggles a bit with the 80g Fox shallow Deviant. It excels in the 30-50g range and is perfect for 6" shads

Although I've only banked a few jacks to about 8lb with it, it has a nice playing action. Its a lovely slim, light weight rod thats an absolute pleasure to use.

I also have a Nexave 8ft 15-40g, a Fox 7ft Jigmaster 10-30g and an 8ft Harris lure pro 15-60g (which actually feels stiffer than he Elite Spin).

For me I think I've found close to the perfect bank spinning rod. I've just had a look at the Mick Brown Spin Stick which looks very versatile but I know I strggle with my Jigmaster when fishing from overgrown banks, 7ft seems a tad too short from the bank.

8 feet - maximum for a spinning rod. For a casting rod 7 feet max.

Some of mine are only 6 feet and I have a cracking little spinning rod of 6½ feet.

What you have there certainly casts within the most popular range of lures. Flog the Harris and Nexave on fleabay and get yourself a nice casting rod like the ET Stinger and Ambassaduer 5000. You won't regret it.

.

Edit: Sorry, new model is now the Gord Burton BANDIT

It's even better.

I've used a DAM black panther 20 - 40g for the last few years with no problems at all.

I have a one piece6'6" Penn Powerstick, cost me £15 12 years ago from the states, neverseen another rod like it, caught pike to over 20lb on it with no problems yet it chucks light lures with ease and you can feel everyshake of a 6oz perch's head, the americans are still light years ahead when it comes to lure fishing.

Sounds like an interesting rod Mark. Whats the lure rating? I've noticed that Mick Browns Spin Stick and Jiggin Stick are both one piece - I guess you get a better action despite modern two-piece rod making technology.

I was looking at Cabelas 'fish eagle 2' range - fantastic rods at the price.

Have any of you tried building your own? Far more satisfying than using a factory product (like handloading one's own rifle ammo) and you can tailor something precisely to your requirements. Any commercial factory rod is a compromise, no matter what they maker says about it being a "specialist" rod or whatever. And the marketing people always impose cosmetic requirements, or other stuff that compromises performance, like (typically) guide size and spacing: factory-rod guides are usually too low on baitcasting rods, for example. Of course, getting the right components in UK is a bugger, but you can shop internationally much easier these days.

Its rated from 7 to 18 gramms (unusual due to the conversion from ounces) and rated 8 -15 lb mono (though I used mine with 15 - 25 lb braids). It chucks up to 25 gramms with ease thoughand will cope with 30 gramms at a push.

For a general purpose lure rod that will cast and cope with most lures apart from the extreme specialist types I highly rate myMick Brown "spin stick". Super rod that ticks all the boxes.

Nice to hear a first hand view of the Spin Stick. I think it could become a classic
