Hi all,

I inherited a large number of rods from my father a number of years ago. I had some good success selling some on eBay but I kept all of the custom made ones, these have my father's name on the rods. After having them sat around my house for a while, now is the time to do something with them. Although, eBay was good to me, I had loads of issues posting the previous ones, my local post office tried to refuse taking them in rod tubes as they were too long. Luckily I persuaded them but I am not sure I would get away with it again.

Therefore the advice I seek is:
Does anyone know any recommended secondhand fishing gear shops in the Somerset area?
Can anyone recommend any courier for eBay sales other than Royal Mail / Parcel Force?
Will the fact the rods are customised with my dad's name affect their value?
Are the rods listed below any good these days?

From the limited knowledge I have and internet research I have done, it seems that these rods were top quality when purchased. My father was much more of a collector than a fisherman, mainly as he moved back to London, so most of these have never seen the water. The rods I have are:

Bruce and Walker Hexagraph 11'6" Avon 1.5lb TC
Bruce and Walker Hexagraph 12' Tench Special 1.5lb TC
Harrison Advanced Rod 12' Avon
Carol McManus 12' Conoflex Kevlar Pike 4lb TC
Simpsons of Turnford, Herts 12' Esox Special Pike
Simpsons of Turnford, Herts 12' Specialist Tench
Tony Fordham 12' Sportex Carbon Kevlar 1.5lb TC
Tony Miles Scottie Supreme Range 12' 6" Tench Float built by Sharpes Rods
Tony Miles Scottie Supreme Range 13' D.D Pike 3lb TC built by Sharpes Rods
Ashpoles of Islington 12' Storm Lite 2lb 2oz TC (poss Vic Gibson)
Ashpoles of Islington 12' Cyclone Lite 1lb 6oz TC (poss Vic Gibson)

Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Looks like your dad had good taste !
Your best to sell them via ebay really as you'll reach a larger audience than anywhere else and you should get the current market price.
There are a few couriers that will deliver your rods to the buyers. I'm sure there'll be a few FM m embers who can reccommend some, if not give one or two tackle shops a ring to see who they use.
Good luck and if you do put them on ebay be sure to post a link on here !

Oh, forgot to say...your dads name may put some buyers off but I belive it's a small job to remove them if need be so I think you'll still have plenty takers :).

Thanks for the advice Tigger, it's good to know that the rods are good quality.

I think I will brave the eBay option again and will post the links on here, something I hadn't thought of before.

I have had a look at some other couriers and it seems TNT do not have the same restrictions on length so will probably give them a go.

Thanks again.

Don't listen to Tigger, they aren't that good and won't sell well if they're written on. I'll give you a tenner for the lot, and that's way more than they're worth :D

I think it might be worth your while to contact Fedex for their prices. I know a couple of shops that seem happy using them.

tc...If you don't put the links on here send me the links via PM, I think I might be having a little bid or two myself ;):D

Thanks for the advice Rob, glad to find someone that knows what they're talking about. I'd hate to think I was ripping you off, so if you want to drive all the way down from North Yorkshire to take a look first that'll be great. Then if you could tell me a bit more about them, I'd put them on eBay with better descriptions!

Thanks again Tigger, I'll have a look at FedEx too. I've got a few other things I need to sort out first but I'll probably have them on eBay in 3 to 4 weeks. I will put the links on here but also make sure you definitely see them.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, well everyone apart from Rob! :D :p

I have finally managed to get some time and have put the above rods on eBay. Please if anyone is interested have a look at my item 291530522126 and then look to see my other items for sale to see the others.

I have tried to list them with realistic starting prices summarising a lot of different advice that I have been given but that said any comments / advice is still gratefully received.

Many thanks.

These have got to be the best selection of rods I have ever seen on ebay.
Starting prices are right. They are all rare examples.

just took a look myself, #RodEnvy

to be honest I have doubts whether you will sell them so easily starting at those prices although they are obviously the minimum they should sell for (just the way ebay works and bidders like to think they are getting a bargain).

The Hexagraph looks lovely, wish I had the cash!

Good Luck

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate I have started them a bit high but that's the prices I wanted for them and I prefer doing that than using reserve prices. I also know that now might not be the best time of year to be selling them. Luckily I have finally moved so storage is not such an issue and there isn't such a need to find them a new home. I will keep relisting them while relisting is free and hopefully they will sell at some point. It just seems such a waste that they are not being used.
