Following concerns expressed by some FM members that this rig could possibly cause foul-hooking it would be appreciated if anyone using it could report if any fish were foul-hooked - Graham, FM editor.

THE BREAD ROLL RIG

The purpose of the rig is to fish a piece of bread at distance and give the following advantages over the usual floating crust, mixer or pellet:

• Has sufficient weight to cast significant distance with no controller or bubble-float
• Will remain intact for a long period
• Cannot be knocked, sucked or pulled off the line
• Will withstand the attentions of small fish
• Leaves a good scent trail
• Is easily seen / found and very attractive to fish of all sizes
• Does not spook fish
• Has no snag problems at all and is very fish friendly
• Is quick and easy to assemble and fish
• Costs less than half a pint of maggots - two loaves will fish all day
• Readily accepts colouring or flavouring (after tying)
• Proven fish-catcher for the many people I have shown this on the bank

How to set up

1. Fold a full slice of bread in half and tear off crust on long side
2. Lay hook and line across short side at bottom (drawing 1) Also add torn crust for extra buoyancy
3. Roll up bread over line and crust in the manner of a swiss-roll, leaving half-inch to inch line and hook protruding
4. Using the line from rod side, wind down roll six to seven turns, then wind back up six or seven turns forming a cage of line around the bread roll
5. Now secure line with two half -hitches (at the end opposite the hook)
6. You now have: hook, (up to) one inch of line, cylinder of bread wrapped in line, line to rod, in that order

I think of it as a hair-rig in reverse. Ideally, the hook should hang down just under the end of the bread on soft line (braid?) rather than stick straight out on stiff line. When the fish sucks at the bread the hook is the first thing to go into its mouth.

A quick dunk in the water gives this rig sufficient weight to be cast around fifty to sixty yards without anything else on the line.
