One of the key elements to buying sunglasses is the tint, which should filter enough light to cut glare and eyestrain, but without filtering out so much that vision actually suffers. Which is why photochromic lenses, which automatically adjust tint to changing light conditions, are ideal for anglers.
And the photochromic features of Spotters is one of the factors that make them considerably more special than your usual 'polarised' sunglasses and what impressed me about them as much as anything:
- Spotters' Penetrator™ Lens Allows 49% of the visible light transmission in dim sunlight... and darkens in brighter light. When the sunlight dims again (for example, the sun goes behind a cloud), the Penetrator lightens to the perfect tint, instantly.
Cutting edge VCE technology
- The Pentrator changes from its lightest to its darkest in just 9 seconds. And anywhere in between even faster.
- It's the fastest photochromic sunglass lens
- Spotters' polarised Penetrator changes from 49% light transmission to 20% light transmission.
- That's 3 times the range of the best known photochromic sunglass brands

Other important factors of course are how well the light is polarised to allow clearer vision through the water's surface and, of course, comfort. It doesn't matter how good the lenses if wearing them is a chore. Fortunately that's not the case with the Spotters frames I've been able to try, which include the 'Twister' the 'Zoe' and the 'Lee'.
Spotters, as the price suggests, are top quality shades that are comfortable to wear, do a great job of protecting your eyesight from glare and UV light and, make spotting fish much easier by dramatically reducing surface glare.
Unfortunately, prescription lenses are not yet available in this country, so spectacle wearers like me need contact lenses to use them.
