Cornwall Winter Leagues

Both the Real Cornwall and Gwinear Leagues were in action this weekend. The clashing dates can cause problems for some anglers who have teams fishing in both leagues. One noticeable absentee from the Real Cornwall being the in-form Simon Pointer, who had a tough choice to make as both his teams are riding high in their respective leagues. Simon's commitment to his Retallack Rebels team (Gwinear League) won the day and we will review his discussion later.

After low weights two weeks ago at Porth Reservoir I safely forecast bigger bags at Real Cornwall's second venue The Windsor Lake, Gwinear Fisheries, near Newquay. The changing weather conditions are no help to anglers and this week has been a real testament to that fact, a slight overnight frost took some colour out of the lake, but the fishing conditions during the match were ideal.

Another in-form angler Chris White (Phoenix B) won “C” section from peg 28, (Bridge) with 45lb 14oz, “A” section was won by yours truly (TMS Toads) with 29lb 5oz and “B” section was won with 37lb 4oz by the evergreen Phil Waters (Gwinear Peasants).

All the top weights were carp bags, fished on pole with corn or maggot hookbait. Gwinear, although throwing up good weights in matches is obviously fishing harder than in the summer months. If you are thinking of paying the venue a visit, remember not to overfeed it? All loose feed needs to be cupped in and four pieces of corn is enough with a few chopped worms to get things moving. Keep the feed to a minimum and the results will be good.

Top team on the day for the second time was Silver Ball with 25 points, there were four teams in joint second on points with St Columb just taking it on weight from Gwinear, TMS Toads and Phoenix A.

Next match in this series is at a new venue for this league, The Upper Tamar Lakes complex. A report will be posted.

So how did Simon Pointer get on? He was fifth overall on the day and his Retallack Team finished a respectable fourth.

The Gwinear League's second match was fished on the Whiteacres Complex. Clint Elliot and his team are busy getting this fishing Mecca ready for this year's rounds of Festivals, Major competitions (Skol Masters) and not forgetting it's core business, the holiday makers who come to fish some of the finest lakes in the country.

Top rod on the day was local hotrod Clive Carter (Cock's Tackle) who fished the match lake peg 17, waggler and corn for 100lb 4oz. Yes you read that right - 100lb! This feet is even more impressive when second on the day came from the next peg, and saw Wayne Mitchell (ALS Geers) fish a similar method for 55lb 10oz. Third on the day fell to Jamie Pearce (Tackle Trader Yellow) who accounted for 49lb 12oz on peg 5 Sycamore lake. It was back to the match lake for 4th spot and not wanting to break up the party Eddie Stevenson (Retallack Rebels) fished peg 16 for 48lb 9oz. Of course all the major weights were made up with carp and a few silver fish.

Top team on the day Milo Oddballs 30 points, 2nd Cock's Tackle 28. 3rd place when to Tackle Trader Yellow, with Simon Pointers Retallack sharing 4th with Milo Blue on 25 points.

Overall position in the league see Cock's Tackle on 52 points, Milo Oddballs and Blue both on 51 and the Rebels three points further adrift with 48. Next match in this league is 4th February at Porth.

On talking to Billy Knott he is send me details of his popular Bill Knott (senior) Memorial Festival and the two day St Erth Classic, details will be posted as soon as they are received.

Once again if you want to know anything about the Cornish Coarse Scene all you have to do is drop me line at phancock@trecare.freeserve.co.uk. if I can't answer your question I will know someone who can.

Keep it tidy and keep it tight.

Paul
