Review - Grey's X-Flite Landing Net

Greys X-Flite
Grey's X-Flite Landing Net

Review - Greys X-Flite Landing Net

  • Specimen Landing Net
  • 42” arms
  • 6ft Carbon handle
  • Patented 'MAX-LOCK' Spreader Block
  • £130.00

AFTER STANDING ON my landing net handle for the 11th time this season, it finally gave up the ghost. It was the best net I've ever owned, never been one better. A bit like Trigger's broom it was - 3 new handles, 4 new nets, new arms and a new spreader block!

Spreader mechanism
Spreader mechanism is easy to operate

I picked up one of these Grey's nets and was quite impressed with the build. Let me qualify that by saying that spending more than 20 quid on a landing net is never going to catch you one extra fish, and you could replace a few cheapies for the cost of some of the 'top end' (whatever that means!) nets.

Saying that, it's a deep mesh - which is lacking in some of the other nets - with an open weave. The spreader mechanism is easy to operate one handed once you get used to it; simply slide the button down with your thumb and the net folds.

Handy ring and clip
Handy ring and clip

Important to me is its lightweight (mine weighs 1lb7oz), and a nice touch is the ring in the bottom of the net plus the clip on the handle to make moving the net around in the water easier, and to stop it snagging on the bottom. A criticism I have of all nets is that they aren't supplied with the net float type devices that Fox and others sell, especially at this price.

Dave Rothery's VERDICT

It's a limited edition net (which cynically means limited to how many they can sell!) so if you want one you may have to be quick. If cost didn't come into it, I'd have rated it much higher than I did as it's a well made piece of kit.

Why should cost be a reason for marking down an item in your review.

You would only buy it if you could afford it in the first place.

I guess by the same token that a Porsche is pretty poor but a Kia is a cracking bit of kit. Hmmm.
