Review - Drennan Series 7, 13ft Feeder

Smart
Smart, professional, businesslike appearance

Drennan Series 7, 13ft Competition Feeder Rod

  • 13ft (3.96m),
  • Rated at 3-7lb (0.14 - 0.20) reel lines, 2 - 6lb (0.10 - 0.18 hooklengths)
  • Three slow taper glass quivertips rated at 2oz, 3oz, and 4oz
  • £89.95
Drennan Say
“This 13ft Competition Feeder takes over from the 12ft model when more power, greater distance and improved line control are required. On rivers the extra length can help to keep more line off the water and out of the flow which allows the use of a lighter more sensitive test curve quiver tip. When distance fishing on big stillwaters the extra length increases casting range and improves line pick up on the strike…..casting weights anything from light bombs to big feeders.”
The rod comes in two pieces with the push-in tips nearing two feet in length, completing the 13ft. The rod has a smart looking screw down reel seat in which a 4000 size reel sits snugly.

The tips come finished in the usual array of fluorescent attire depending on their strength and are provided in a protective plastic tube. The blank finish I would describe as “slate grey with a cross style weave”.

Mark Hodson's Verdict

It's not until you take this rod in hand that you can appreciate what a truly versatile tool it is. The usual Drennan rules apply, it looks professional rather than flashy, and the build quality and finish are extemporary. It is suitable for chucking medium open end feeders with the 2oz tip to the horizon for bream, capable of heaving out a decent method ball and yet ideal for a block end work on medium to large sized rivers. You get a lot of rod for the money.

At 13ft the pick up on the strike is second to none and although the rod's action is on the stiff side the long slow taper glass tips help absorb any over enthusiasm on the strike. I've even purchased a 1oz tip and used it for long distance winter roach work. With a heavy block-end feeder and 6lb braid, firing out those maggots on light links to a distance is easy, yet it retains indication sensitivity. This combines with a tremendous pick up on the strike and the rod proves itself more than capable in yet another department.

The 13ft length helps when keeping that little extra line out of the water on flowing venues and proves useful for keeping out of trouble if fishing near bank snags.

Rated at 2, 3, and 4oz

The rod has a lot of backbone when required and I have no doubt it would have plenty in reserve to tame double figure barbel and near 20lb carp if need be.

The omission of a hook retaining ring is a small point that I would have like to have seen included but doesn't detract at all from the rod's overall performance. It is true enough that you are getting a “Jack of all trades and master of none”, but like master craftsmen, top of the range rods built for specific tasks don't come cheap and 95% of anglers working on a budget with limited resources will find this rod will fill a lot of holes in their armoury, and as you can pick them up for just over £70, it will provide fantastic value for money too.

Im on the lookout for a rod for long range breaming as my current 12 foot rod is a bit undergunned for any chuck over 40-50 yards

this one seems to be just what I am after, Ill definately give it a look. good review.
