Overview

New manufacturer of premium LED torches, Premierlight, has expanded its product range with the introduction of a high-performance camping lantern that offers supreme illumination without the concern of open flames or fumes.

Premierlight has applied the same advanced LED technology as its torches in this lantern, which offers 20 powerful, bright white LEDs in the centre that illuminate through 360 degrees and are rated for 110,000 hours, or 12 years, continuous use (an average incandescent torch bulb is rated for only 20 hours).

By turning the rubber knob between the secure-off and 'max' positions, the rheostat control determines the amount of light emitted.

Thanks to Premierlight's energy efficient LED's in this lantern, three D-Cell batteries will provide in excess 45 days (1000+ hours) continuous illumination.

To the top of the lantern is a push-button that activates six bright red LEDs, which aid natural night vision. Push the button twice and these red LEDs flash the international SOS emergency signal, a feature found in all Premierlight instruments.

The durable polycarbonate housing and rubber gripped handle make this lantern lightweight and comfortable to carry.

The Premierlight Lantern is the latest addition to the premium range of lighting instruments produced by a Kent-based family firm with 30 years of experience in optical products:

“The Lantern is an energy-efficient, 100% safe and no-fuss solution to night-time illumination, whether you are camping, entertaining or even suffering a power-cut at home”, comments John Vickers, Premierlight Managing Director.

“We've spent years perfecting this range of instruments, so I'm delighted that the British public are responding so positively to the Premierlight offering of simple yet efficient performance”.

The Premierlight Lantern is available from Outdoor retailers nationwide priced at £29.99 and carries a limited lifetime guarantee.

FishingMagic Verdict

Certainly the best bivvy light I've yet seen, with a variety of white or coloured light that can be dimmed or brightened to suit whatever you're doing.

The red light is ideal for baiting the hook without spoiling your night vision, and the white light can be dimmed for all night use while you're enjoying a kip and waiting for a bite. Then turned up with a simple twist of the knob to give you extra light when packing away or doing something that requires better vision.

Premierlight LED Lantern

It's not exactly a lightweight, but much lighter than I expected at 0.8kg (1¾ lb) for a lamp of this size and power.

Not as cheap and cheerful as a candle or two, a regular torch hanging somewhere, or a bivvy lamp with a single tungsten bulb, but I know which I'd rather have.

Looks like with the advent of LEDs, my Colman petrol powered storm lantern is going to see the end of its days very soon. Plus, the Colman is dangerous to use inside anywhere and especially so a bivvy. The new price of this Premierlight is about half that of a Colman anyway.

The only thing that gets me is the use of D cells. Why not go for ordinary AAs or allow for a simple recharging connection? Just seems a little early 19th century thinking and why three batteries? Why not two or four for that's how you buy them and charge them up, surely the lamp could be regulated with an even number of batteries?

So, it looks like a good deal that needs a little tweeking here and there. My first thoughts, anyway.
