Fishing related injury advice with BIOFREEZE®
Whether coarse fishing, fly fishing, ice fishing, even rock fishing - angling is one of the world's most popular pastimes. While not a sport associated with injury, it still has its dangers.
BIOFREEZE® sports and exercise physician Dr Catherine Laraman says:“From back pain to fish hook wounds, angling Injuries can come in many forms”.
One of the most common problems in those who fly fish is shoulder injury. The repeated action of casting tends to create “overuse” injuries in anglers' shoulders causing problems with the rotator cuff tendons. The rotator cuff muscles are a group of muscles that control the shoulder girdle. The tendons of these muscles can become squashed under a bony arch in the shoulder which is known as impingement. This causes gradual wear and tear to the tendons which don't have sufficient time to recover for those doing a high volume of fishing.
“Typically,” continues Dr Laraman, “injury to these tendons will cause pain in the shoulder, running down the outside of the upper arm. This may occur after a lot of casting and the angler may find it difficult or painful to lift their arm above their head. Treatment usually involves taking a break from angling for a while to allow the tissues to recover although more severe cases may require corticosteroid injections or even surgery.
“Fortunately there are some steps you can take to avoid these injuries. Train up the muscles that rotate the shoulder out, along with the muscles that hold the shoulder blade in a good position. Some anglers use weights or resistance bands to do this. You might also consider some coaching to perfect your technique.”
For tips on how to avoid serious injury and rehabilitation while angling, Dr Laraman and the fast acting pain relief gel, BIOFREEZE®, have created a unique on-line resource for amateur sports enthusiasts, www.biofreezesport.co.uk. The site also details how to identify, treat and avoid common injuries whilst fishing, as well as thirteen of the UK's favourite sports.
Dr Catherine Laraman, who provided medical consultation for the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002 and the BBC's Run for Glory in 2006 explains;
“The BIOFREEZE® Amateur Sports Injury Clinic is a great resource for angling enthusiasts concerned about common injuries. It will help them find out more about what they can do to prevent injury, as well as what kind of treatment they might need.”
The BIOFREEZE® Amateur Sports Injury Clinic angling pages also feature up-to-date news and fixture calendar, making it a one stop shop for all amateur anglers.
