The Wyre Rig - the Ultimate Carp Rig

The Wyre Rig
The Wyre Rig

Sliding Hook Length With 360%, otherwise known as the Wyre Rig

in my opinion this is the ultimate big fish rig for hard waters. It was responsible for catching me my PB twice at 63lb and 56lb as well as other carp of 52lb and 50lb and my first English 30, plus countless other big fish. On my first visit to Wyreside it banked me three 20's in the first four hours on the water, and that's no easy feat for Wyreside.

The Sliding Hook Link with 360% , or Wyre Rig for short, was designed to combat the carp from spooking when they are sucking at baits from a distance to see if they spring back, which can happen a lot on hard fished waters where they have seen everything. Well guys, they ain't seen this rig.

You will have to study the photos carefully to see how it's put together, but you will soon see the idea and the mechanics of the rig. It works best with balanced baits, but can be used with any bottom bait. And also any hooklength material.

But a word of warning - don't use it if you can catch on other easier methods because there is nowhere else to go when they get used to rigs like these and you will just make the carp almost uncatchable. The right place at the right time for this rig. Or when you're catching naff-all.

PVA dissolves and the rig is free to slide

About the Rigs Page

The Rigs Page is a library of features to illustrate all those rigs that will be useful to both beginners and experienced anglers.

The rigs can be extremely simple and well known, or very complicated and little known, it doesn't matter providing they make some kind of sense and have a really practical application.

It could be a standard running leger rig that a beginner will appreciate seeing in pictures, or a very complicated anti-eject carp rig that the experienced carp angler would like to see.

If you wish to contribute a rig to this section please remember that the emphasis is on illustration rather than words. Good line drawings are fine in the absence of photographs. Please send to graham@fishingmagic.com
