Association of Barbel Fishers

The ABF cordially invite everyone to an informal 'evening with the experts' on 30 May.

The expert panel will comprise:

Len Arbery: All round angling legend.

Ray Walton: Unrivaled rolling meat supremo and keen conservation campaigner.

Keith Speer: King of the stick and 'pin.

There will also be a presentation by the Thames Anglers Conservancy (TAC) who fight to protect the River Thames and its anglers and the Action for the River Kennet Group (ARK) who campaign to protect the River Kennet.

The evening will consist of an open forum where Len, Ray, Keith and the representatives from the TAC and ARK invite questions from the audience on both angling and conservation issues.

Paul Whiteing the centrepin guru, will also be on hand with a selection of 'pins and rods for your viewing pleasure. Paul is not in the tackle trade but will have some new and used centrepins for sale.

The event takes place on Wednesday 30 May 2012 at the Basingstoke Railway Social Club, Northside, Station Approach, Basingstoke, RG21 5NB at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be a full bar available in the private function room and plenty of opportunity to chat with fellow anglers both before and after the event.

Cost:
Members £3.00
Non Members £5.00

There is a strict limit on numbers so it is recommended that anyone wishing to attend buys an advance ticket HERE to guarantee their place.

Looks like the highlight of the Barbel Year Nathan. If I can get out of what I am committed to currently I will definately come. Its not one to Miss. Graham

let yourself down with that comment Graham, I thought you might be better than that. If you had said," One of the highlights of the year", I would not have questioned your motive. So as there is no confusion I too hope this meeting goes well, I'm sure it will.

Can't see anything wrong with Graham's comment it is just his personal opinion. Are we not free to express an opinion anymore Steve?
Steve Pope on 30/04/2012 23:42:55

Of course, and that is my very considered one.

I rather think you are rattled for some reason Steve, and that is my very considered opinion.

I hardly think so, the sun is out and I'm about to enjoy a day on the beach. I've just watched the football and pleased to see the result so it's a good start to another fine day in Sydney. we will just have to agree to differ in our considered opinions.

Steve. I have no idea why you responded like you did.......... I have never heard Len Arbery talk before at a public meeting. Keith gave a talk at one of the BS Berkshire meeting I ran. It was superb and underpinned his expertise at float fishing for barbel. He is also an expert at Zander fishing, with some stunning photography. As I have a Severn Ticket this season I will have a go for them. I also fished with Keith a couple of times at the end of the season and he is attending one of my Wye weekends. Its called support. Ray is acknowledged as as star at Rolling meat. I am more interested to hear and discuss his environmental concerns though. An opportunity to meet some very well know anglers with differing skill aspects, and for me not the same same. FOR YOUR INFORMATION. I also posted on and said I planned to attended Des's BS Wiltshire meeting on thursday this week as it would be a good night with a new face to see just in the last 2 weeks. On the "pretend fishing trip" you phoned me and apologised for not understanding what had happened. You really should apologise again. That was disappointing. You should be better than that.

graham, you are showing me your true colors, I thought things were ok between us but obviously not. Remember the boy at school, sat at the back and was always being naughty but the teacher always missed him and blamed the other kids, if the teacher got close the boy would always say not me sir, it was him. You know exactly what you were saying and the reason I responded was because I took it as a personal insult to all the lads who are working flat out to put on a Show that many enjoy. You once stood on that stage and gave a presentation. It was a dig and you know it and that is why I am angry and so would anyone else be. If I were you I would apologies to Nathan for provoking my response on his thread, he now can see what I and others have had to put up with for a number of years.

Make your mind up Steve, in post #11 you say you are not angry and having a lovely day and then in post #13 you say you are angry...........You can't have it both ways.

Graham and Ade, Steve's posts appears to contain a hint of paranoia and it is plain for all to see. I saw no mention of the BS show in your post Graham just a personal opinion of what you thought so why he has chosen to take it that way is beyond believe. Perhaps it is more than paranoia is it that he thinks the BS is superior to all else or is that the formation of the ABF is taking its toll on the BS? Steve has using his own words "shown his true colours" by posting what can only be describe as a childish attack on Graham Elliott. I think we have all had enough of the constant bickering that surrounds the BS. You should think before you post Steve or was it your intention to drum up some interest in an ailing Society? Graham has praised the work the BS do on the research and conservation front why not leave it at that? You could have ignored Graham's post you chose not to so there was obviously an agenda on your part. Kind regards Ray

:D So why are you getting involved Raymond?? There was no need for you to say a word except that it made your day. Very sad. Rich.

Steve. I have no idea why you chose to attack me for simply responding to Nathans invite. I have no doubt the BS show will be great, with many notable anglers. But for me it's too long and too expensive being semi-retired. I have frequently extolled the virtues of the BS on this site, so I think your response is totally out of order, and on reflection, if you have any honesty so will you. Anyway. I won't post again on this. But I will be going to what I consider will be a great night and feel warranted to suggest others attend. (as I did on the Swindon BS meet on 3rd May here and on BFW) To suggest I should apologise to Nathan for extolling the virtues of the event he is arranging is a bit silly. But I do think you should apologise to us both for intervening in a rather nasty manner. Thats quite unlike your normal sensible behaviour. I did see you edited out the more inflamatory personal aspects, so a bit of common sense prevailed. Graham

:D So why are you getting involved Raymond?? There was no need for you to say a word except that it made your day. Very sad. Rich. Rich, It was nice of Fred to answer for you he reckons you were out tramping round some farmers field! Why did I post...simple I don't like to see a persons personal view/opinion used to allow another person with an obvious agenda to use it as a way to post personal attack. We recently had Fred and Graham going hammer and tongs I am sure that most on here are sick and tired of the BS bickering that crops up all to frequently. You Fred and Steve may think the BS show is the highlight of the year a biased view of course. Others may disagree that either the BS or its show are the be all and end all of barbel angling. The problems is Rich I saw no mention of the BS show in Graham's post. Steve was in my opinion out of order with the reasons he posted, he obviously realised his mistake and tried to cover it up with an edit. In a world of free speach I reserve the right to comment, you have the same right and have used it albeit to tell me in not so many words I don't have the right to comment on what was clearly a personal attack on Graham. As for sadness I can safely say there is none on my part, I can not speak for you or others. I hope that has answered your question of why I involved myself in an open and honest and friendly manor. Ray

The thread has been reported, not for any one specific post more for the reason that the thread has gone massively off track. The complainant, one far more eloquent than myself says ... "I do think that it would be nice if we could talk about our event and not have the thread hijacked by BS and BS antagonists alike." He finishes a very considered and non aggressive email by stating "I go barbel fishing and I'm alright, don't see why others can't be ;-)" Can we keep the personal stuff to PM please and focus on the merits of the event? Cheers EC

Moderation note: This thread is in grave danger of being closed which would be a great pity as it started off with the best intentions to simply advertise an event. Keep the insults to PM's or the thread will be locked!

Having spoken to Len on numerous occasions recently in respect of articles, and met him once or twice on the river bank, I can honestly say that the audience are probably in for a great evening. The man is full of stories from his early days on the Hampshire Avon, right up to his current exploits on the Thames. A good man to have speaking, don't expect any swim locations though, I tried.

Cheers EC Hi...I am really sorry that the AFB member felt the need to submit a formal complaint. Maybe members of the Barbel Society should do the same but I feel you would be snowed under as you well know. :( Every single mention of the BS,it's members and it's committee causes a small handful of people( and you know who there are) to take the opportunity to have a go. I hope you will take note of this in the future. Thanks, Rich.

No need for thanks, just keeping the thread on track having been politely asked to do so, see also the Stapeley thread, I wasn't asked there but decided to do the same! It's just fishing. ABF, BS, the vast majority here don't care! Really they don't! Now if we can get back to the thread topic and keep it there.

Can't wait for the season to start again, so that people can get out on the river banks as opposed to posting cryptic threads on forums like this waiting for members to bite. I joined this forum to help me out with fishing related questions, to see how places are fishing and to chat to like minded people. Sadly, I'm getting a bit frustrated by the way these threads get hijacked and think it's a real shame.

Hi Everyone, Much to do about nothing I'd say. I'm a BS member (I think. Is it renewal time?) and I wasn't the least bit offended by Mr Elliotts post. I'm also a ABF member and didn't take the slightest offence at Mr Popes posts either. What's a "barbel war" by the way? Regards, Lee.
