A senior officer for Thames told us the other night that he would bet his next month's salary that a drought is called by the end of February. That's two reason's why I'm now praying for rain....

The Stour (yes I know that's the Dorset Stour!) is pretty low. I fished an area on Tuesday that is normally totally inaccessible in normal winter conditions. Had to plough through some mud and willows but got to the "swim" and had quite a few chub from it. The Avon, Itchen and Test are all very low so we definitely need rain. Where I work (ex farmland), the owner has an ancient wellhead which he sometimes uses. Talking to him yesterday, he's an angler as well, he reckons the water in his well is currently 45 feet down the shaft. His rustic barrel on a chain won't reach! But he installed a pump some 5 years ago but has never used it until now. He's never known it so low and he's lived in the family farm house for 70+ years.
