Matt Hayes - 24 Hour Rod Race

Matt Hayes' new TV series begins this evening on Discovery Shed - and we have a sneak preview for you!

New angling programmes on TV are all too few and far between but the good news for armchair fishing fans is that the Mattster is back with a six-episode series which sees him set 24 hours in which to complete a challenge. 'Just' a challenge would be far too easy though, wouldn't it? The twist here is that Matt has no idea what the challenge is until it is texted through to him and the clock starts running...

The series starts tonight, 22 June, on Discovery Shed at 22.00 with Matt first having to find the fishery and then having to catch two 20lb carp: one off the top, and one off the bottom.

To whet your appetite for the series take a look at the preview here:

I am really looking forwards to this , some will question the venues ( I think I saw Furnace Mill in there ) but when you watch it ask yourselves whether you could achieve it , I doubt I could.

I know plenty who could!!

Correct.......................................................... Sorry I didn't mean to sound abrupt , but it would be interesting to see how difficult the challenges really are ? Like I said depends on the venue possibly , hopefully not too much of the programme will be taken up with the finding of the venue - thats not interesting and not fishing either.

Please enjoy it. thanks Mate ! There was some daft programme about Eddie Stobart truck drivers where they constantly tried to add a sense of drama throughout the programme , lets hope its the fishing and the settings that create the interest with this one.

I love that Stobart program, I've got it on series record. (How do I access smilies on this board?) Really I can't tell if you are kidding or not , like I said I have only seen a small triler for the program, but generally with a lot of these reality programs I hate the heavily , and false , tendency to try and make things more dramatic than they are, or build the suspense and then after the ad break repeat the same shots. You can get digital video recorders now that strip out the adverts , on some american tv shows that makes a half hour show come in at around 19 minutes, with the rest being adverts. Hence my point that I hope that not too much of this programme is taken up with Matt finding the venue , lets face it anyone with a sat nav or a map could find anything anywhere in Britain.

I watched Matt's program and they did repeat everything after each set of ads. (ended up ff'ing the ads and repeated footage on +). Good to see a new coarse angling program but not over impressed by E1, hopefully will improve. Jerry

All my family apart from me are drivers, it's interesting to see how the job has changed since I used to go with my dad 40 odd years ago. I find it amazing that these young people can navigate these behemoths around a road system which was designed for horse and carts. They are grossly undervalued imo. The beauty of recording it is as you say, you can strip out all the **** and concentrate on the bits which interest you.

Gutted I missed this, hopefully knowing Shed they'll be plenty of repeats... will be in front of the telly on Friday night now watching fishing, not football! Personally, i think MH's stuff is great, he's by far the best broadcaster our sport's ever had. This is proved every time i see any of angling's other big names making videos..

Just watched it and all I can say is brilliant a real fishing programme from a top class angler - well done Matt , best fishing prog I have ever watched. It was a well made enjoyable watch but sadly he somewhat over-played the magnitude of the task facing by him; The Sitch fishery isn't what most carp anglers most would call particuarly challenging..... But a cracking brace of 30's none the less. I liked this line: "you can't control the size of the fish that picks up your bait, especially in this situation........... it's just a numbers game." Liking the irony of it, following his recent article in Angling Times, not chasing numbers anymore, hmmm.:D Oh yes; it IS possible to increase the odds of your capture being over any said weight (within reason); trouble is the fisheries will undoubtedly be harder. Looking for two 20lb+ carp - Orchid lakes is a prime example. If anyone wishes to replicate Matt's two 20's in 24hrs try; any of the RH fisheries, Drayton res, Thorpe Lea, Linears (but I'd avoid Brasenose 2).............

Colin do you think you could do the one of the top one off the bottom thingy ? As a newish angler who has fished a limited amount of waters I have no idea how difficult this is or not. It did seem to take him a long time to get the first 20 plus one , the way he moved pegs etc was good fishing but also suggested he had the lake to himself. Very enjoyable 2nd episode - missed the first , I watched it twice and I thought it very different to many other fishing stuff , I can't wait till the next one.

Benny, this will probably look very arrogant on my part but yes I know I could get a 20 both off the top and from the bottom in a 24hr period. The difficulty really lays in the choice of fishery. Matt's choice/type of lake was basically one of the easiest fisheries to achieve his goal. I don't fault him for his venue selection, it's just that I personally found his constant gibbering-on about how tough a challenge it was rather irksome. Nice to see a new fishing series though and it was well made, with pretty good footage.

I understand , when someone says to me how do you wire a building put phones in and connect them to the internet , to me its easy as I have been doing it for so long , its just the way it is. But the fishing off the top was very good too watch worth another look I think , unless of course he passes every task.

Too easy a challenge this week I think so a less interesting program, i am not advocating that false drama you so often get in reality tv , but that venue seemed to be teeming with large perch , its a trout lake in leicestershire , but I cant find the name of it. Was it the one used in catching the impossible where you can see trout fry making the water literally boil as the perch attack them ? Did anyone elsee watch it ?

Eyebrook Benny Jerry Eyebrook- Trout Fishery Cheers , Did you watch this weeks ? Nice perch ! and the weed defeating hook looked interesting but seemed laughably easy though , Maybe because he chose to fish there rather than go straight out on a boat

Yep, watched it this morning. It did seem too easy but we all know days like that happen - the second day was a bummer. I'm not familiar with the trout fishery, did he get a 'special' to coarse fish it or do they open the reservoir to coarse anglers during the year - if not what's the point of the episode? Jerry
