'HONEST RELIABLE LINE'
Strengths:
Low line memory. Knots well. Abrasion resistant. Good strength to diameter statistices. Readily available. Good value in the 300m spools.
Weaknesses:
None that I have yet encountered.
Overall:
Having become disillusioned with my ESP Gold, I tried Ultima as a result of reports in the angling press. If you haven't yet tried this line I recommend you do - I don't think you will be disappointed.
I have used Ultima at 8lb bs (0.25mm) for barbel fishing on the Hampshire Avon (not the kindest river to monofil!!!) and found that it is well up to the task. Despite some weed problems I was able to land barbel to 7lb, plus chub to 5lb, with no sign whatsover of line abrasion or damage. Used at 6lb bs (0.22mm) for feeder fishing for carp to double figures on my local club lake, I am satisfied that this line can certainly take punishment without letting you down.
It sinks well and I particularly like the greenish colour which seems to blend with most water conditions. It is low stretch which enhances bite detection but there certainly seems to be just the right amount of stretch to avoid hook pulls from last second lunges at the net. I don't have a micrometer so I can't confirm the stated diameters, but independant tests seem to bear out Ultima's claims. It is certainly thinner than the stuff I was previously using. I haven't yet tried this line for waggler fishing but I will due to it's good sinking qualities (which, incidentally, would make it unsuitable for loafer or stick float work).
There are a lot of lines on the market and, in truth, some of them shouldn't be there! Some make wildly exaggerated claims about diameter and strength and some claim magical qualities which make them invisible in water. This line delivers what it claims. If you are looking for an honest and reliable reel line I recommend you give Ultima a trial. A spool won't break the bank and could help you put more fish ON the bank.
