'BRILLIANT ROD - SUPERB VALUE.'
Strengths:
It's strength lies in that it can turn it's hand to so many types of fishing. Light ledgering, float fishing, free-lining, feeder fishing and so on...

It is, as the bumpf says, essentially 8 rods in one (if you count each quiver tip as a different rod) and it performs well above average in every area.

The dolly section which gives the rod an extra foot (13ft) really comes in useful for a bit of extra power to keep fish from reaching snags or when float fishing at any distance.
Weaknesses:
any multi purpose rod will never be quite as good as a dedicated float rod or a dedicated feeder rod but for those on a budget or with limited storage space you can't go wrong.
Overall:
Love it, I've landed many memorable fish with this rod and never have I felt it would let me down.

'IT'LL DO WHAT YOU WANT IT TO'
Strengths:
Lovely through action. Very adaptable. Multi length. Good build quality.
Weaknesses:
Slightly weak reel seat design. Would have like a 1oz tc quiver.
Overall:
I was going to start this review by outlining what this rod could do. Instead, however, I'll start by what it can't do and that is fish 12oz bottoms for mini roach or launch huge method balls for carp. Everything in between is more or less in it's capability. Although it's been going for a few years now, this rod is still available, still selling in good numbers and still landing the fish. Obviously Masterline believe they have a winning product and you would have to agree with them. Why change a good design? I have used this rod at 11ft with a waggler on 'snake' waters for match sized carp where it's 1.25lb tc tip is more than capable of handling low double figure carp and I've also used it for trotting for chub on the fast flowing River Itchen at it's 13ft length.
As a quiver rod with three insert tips of 1.5oz, 2oz and 2.5oz test curves, it is a great feeder all-rounder at both 11ft for still waters and 13ft for larger rivers like the Hampshire Avon and Thames or when you need extra power on still waters. It would have been nice to have an option of a 1oz tip for blockend feedering for roach and skimmers however.
When loaded, this rod displays the typical Masterline through action which means it is a joy to play fish with the soft action helping to avoid hook pulls at the net. It'll fish reel lines up to 8lb but if you need to go heavier try this rod's big brother, the 1.75lb tc Barbel Quiver System. I have one of these as well and can highly recommend them.

All in all, this rod will do most things extremely competently and a few things excellently. At a RRP of £99 it's not particularly cheap but you can get them for about £70 through the discount catalogues. You get a lot of rod for your money. If you only buy one rod for most of your fishing then this has got to be on your list.

One final point, the reel seat is screw down, but don't tighten it too tightly as the cork on the screw-down can split. Also, this rod will not take big pit reels - but then it was never designed to.

'GOOD ALL ROUNDER'
Overall:
Excellent Rod. I was looking for a "beefed up" feeder rod to replace my old one. I've found it!

'GREAT THROUGH ACTION RIGHT DOWN TO THE BUTT'
Strengths:
I think value for money the over all package is well worth the price.
Weaknesses:
I have to agree with other anglers who have writen in, and say that the reel mount does seem a bit on the week side, but I have had no problems as yet. I did contact Masterline to find out if spares were a problem to get, and was informed that they can be got direct from them.
Overall:
I have now landed some 25 barbel so far this year and felt that at no time was the rod wanting, the action I found to be right through to the butt and the rod was a big asset in playing the fish. With my best fish to 11lb I was more than happy with my new rod, and the way it performed.

'SO GOOD I BOUGHT FOUR (AND ONE FOR MY DAD!)'
Strengths:
So versatile - I've used mine for trotting for chub, floater fishing for big carp, tench and bream fishing on small pits, waggler fishing for big roach, the list goes on.
Weaknesses:
None that I can think of
Overall:
If you want to buy just one rod then this is a great option. You can do so much with it and it performs well in most situations.

'THE ONLY ROD YOU SHOULD EVER NEED.'
Strengths:
Versatile, adaptable, and should meet most needs on rivers and stillwaters, and all at an affordable price.I sold two rods I rarely used to buy mine. Best of all as a two piece 11 ft it can be set up and folded easily to make me more mobile.
Weaknesses:
Poor reel seat which threatens to snap when screwed up. If only the dolly section had a split ring which would allow you to switch from 11 to 13 ft without breaking down it would be perfect.
Overall:
Excellent all rounder. At 13ft it will punch a heavy feeder 50 yards with ease. As a 11ft float rod I have netted carp to 14lbs using light line and never doubted its capability to tame the fish.

'EXCELLENT ALL ROUND ROD'
Strengths:
It's biggest strength is it's action. The Avon style always seesm to have sensitivity and a bit of poke when needed. My wife used mine to take a 35lb Common and had no problems when we had to clamp down to stop it going into lilies.
Weaknesses:
The top rings are a bit small and silly.
Overall:
This is definitely the rod to have if you only have one, and consider the Barbel version (1.75lb tc) for general carping.

'GREAT ROD FOR THE PRICE PAYED £69 INC P&P FOR MINE. '
Strengths:
A very good allround rod, good line pick up when striking and a good performance when playing fish, very versatile.
Weaknesses:
Rod bag is of poor quality, and the 2ft section would be better without the line guide to make it easier to change between 11ft and 13ft while in use.
Overall:
A great rod but you get what you pay for at the end of the day and it`s a very good budget rod.

'GREAT BUT NOT QUITE PERFECT.'
Strengths:
All round river rod that can turn its hand to the lakes. Good tip selection. Nice through action.

[Update 08/05/06] All round river rod that can turn its hand to the lakes with ease. Good tip selection. Lovely through action. Perfect for small to medium rivers. Handles Barbel and Chub very well.

Weaknesses:
Weak top screw, can easily crack cork under pressure. Small reel seat test reel before you buy. No keeper ring...Oh dear..not a true stalker rod so I have whipped some on my pair.

[Update 08/05/06] Weak top screw, can crack cork under pressure if heavy handed. Smallish reel seat; test reel before you buy especially centre pins. No keeper ring...?? Oh dear for another 50p or so this would really be a useful extra, had to whip on some of my own. Just short of being the perfect stalker rod without those keeper rings.

Overall:
I broke a tip and emailed Masterline about a replacement, of course they did not reply. The rods perform well but lack the fine edge finish of say the Fox barbel duos or Shimano equivalents. The reel seat however is a big dissapointment and for the 2006 season my pair will be de-comissioned and replaced by something else.

[Update 08/05/06] The rods perform very well and come with an extra section to vary the length. Mine rated at 1+1/4 and are a delight to use. All in all great rods that just need a few tweaks to make them into brilliant rods. Perhaps the MK3s will achieve this?
