 | | | Posted: 31/05/07 | | 'TOUGH, VERSATILE AND GOOD VALUE BUT COULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED BETTER.' | | Strengths: Main strengths are the price (about £50) and versatility. The rucksack is essentially 2 bags in 1, in that it comes complete with an additional carry all which can be attached to the top of the main rucksack, or used on its own with a shoulder strap. The material is very tough and seems water resistant, the zips are strong, with chunky handles enabling them to be easily opened or closed. There are both waist, and chest buckles which when fastened make for a more comfortable weight distribution if carrying a lot of kit over long walks. And there is a carry handle for lifting in and out of the car or for hanging/storing the rucksack on a wall for example.
The main rucksack has 5 pockets of various sizes; the widest of which can house a large size flat tackle box (Raaco type) as well as a medium size fox/chub type box. The smaller pockets can keep fragile items alarms, scales, spools etc separate from the main compartment.
The carry all has buckles to attach to the main rucksack, a shoulder strap, 1 large compartment and the pockets at either end are big enough to hold a small stove or 2 standard gas canisters.
| | Weaknesses: The main rucksack could have done with some means of support to keep it upright, if the pockets are full it collapses in on itself.
Also, a better design would have been to have a large flap which totally overlaps the main compartment so rain will just run off. Currently the top flap effectively sits flat and flush with the opening to the main compartment, meaning water cannot roll off, so it gathers on top then rolls in when you open the zip.
When the carryall is attached on top of the rucksack, it is quite unstable and is easier carried by using the shoulder strap.
| | Overall: This is a large hard wearing rucksack that will last a lifetime, and at a very affordable price.
The detachable carryall is handy. For example in mine I have cooking/eating equipment which I take just for long stay sessions, meaning if I do an overnighter I know everything I will need is in this bag.
Despite a few slight design hitches, the overall quality is still good, but a good product could have been truly excellent with just a few minor additions. |
