'OK REEL AT A BARGAIN PRICE'
Strengths:
Price obviously, with about 50-60 yards of 2-3lb line it doesnt bed in the narrow spoil and pays of quite nicely.
Weaknesses:
A bit stiff at first until the gear grease thins down a bit. I suppose a bit heavy but the weight didnt bother me.
Overall:
As I said if you dont over fill the spool then it performs ok, I ceratinly had no problems.

'Budget closed face reel'
Strengths:
Feels reasonable quality at a reasonable price.
Weaknesses:
Quite heavy and chunky if you are standing trotting all day. Some difficulty encountered with paying off line when trotting using 'very light' tackle.
Rear drag does not 'feel quality'
Overall:
Tried one of these new DAM reels for the first time on Saturday. Loaded with 2.6lb line, trotting on a shallow, slow flow river.

The single push action to release line works well, and the reel casts line and float no problem. The pick up is performed by simply turning the handle, which can be left or right mounted.

I would suspect that possibly by using heavier terminal tackle the line may pay off easier.

If you want to have a go with a closed face reel and can't justify an Abu, then for under 30 quid, it is worth considering.
