Practical Carp Fishing

By Graham Marsden and Mark Wintle

The Crowood Press

ISBN 978 1 84797 133 3

Although some sections delve more deeply into advanced techniques, it never neglects the inexperienced carp angler, leading him to a full understanding by explaining in simple terms the basics of carp fishing.

The new book offers a thorough insight into the carp itself, its feeding habits and general behaviour. This helps the angler to build his knowledge of the species and to establish a solid foundation upon which to base his choice of tackle, tactics and baits when fishing a variety of waters.

Rigs and baits are covered in depth

The authors have a wealth of experience to draw from, Graham as one of the most experienced all-round big fish anglers in the UK, including many years of catching big carp, and Mark with his analytical skills honed over many years of match fishing which he puts to good use by examining carp fishing with fresh eyes.

Practical carp fishing advice from anglers with years of experience

This lavishly illustrated book (over 200 photographs, the majority taken specifically for this book by the authors) is written in a plain, easy to understand, style. There is a logical progression from simple techniques to more complex ones to help both inexperienced and experienced carp anglers along the carp catching learning curve.

You can’t help but become a better carp angler by reading this book. It would make an ideal Christmas present.

Priced at £19.95, and available from specialist booksellers, or contact www.crowood.com to buy directly from the publisher.

Personally, I think you both ought to sign a couple of copies and send them to me and Jeff to review. The usual tenner inside the dust cover each should ensure a half decent thumbs up :wh

Amazon are selling the book from as low as £12.66p New, which is a bargain in that respect.

Amazon are selling the book from as low as £12.66p New, which is a bargain in that respect. Yes, but 2 weeks ago they were Out of Stock - Limited Quantity it said . . . So, I got mine from the publisher at the damn full price . . . . . . Do you think that the Authors might offer to refund me the difference? Nah, thought not . . . . . .

Buy the cheap one, then sell yours as new on Ebay, for £19.99p some idiot will offer you more for it, i'm sure :D (no, i don't want it) :D

SV said "Amazon are selling the book from as low as £12.66p New, which is a bargain in that respect". Plus £2.75 postage. Amazon themselves selling at £15.54, free postage. How much does Graham and Mark get out of a sale? Do they get more when bought at top price?
Mark Wintle on 02/12/2009 19:50:34

Without divulging the exact terms of our contract etc. the way it works is this: authors earn royalties on a percentage of the net price which is the amount the publisher receives not the actual selling price. But Amazon demand and get a bigger discount on full price than an ordinary retailer so that sales through Amazon earn less royalties than book shop sales. So variances in Amazon's price don't affect the royalties earnt as they are paying a fixed percentage price of full retail. In addition publishers make an advance payment of royalties that has to be 'earnt' before any more royalties are paid. This is obviously based on projected print run and potential sales. Generally fishing book advances are very small compared to the headline best seller advances though occasionally big publishers get it wrong vis a vis David Blunkett's autobiography which had an advance of £400,000 yet hardly sold at all.

Far be it from me to say this, but has been pointed out by one or two FM members that Mr. Wintle looks a little...just a little... like The Prince of Darkness himself, Count Dracular. Think about it. Have any of you seen him wearing a large crusifix or a string of garlic bulbs round his neck? I guess not. Firm proof if ever I have seen it. I mean come on, only the undead can spend a great deal of time in the great out doors fishing and not pick up a hint of a sun tan. And if you ever go fishing with him, check out the lack of reflection on the water in front of him... Some say Count Wintle is actually the love child of well known vampire, Ray Reardon and his long lost brother is Eddie Munster look-a-like, Ray Quinn.

Now don't you be winding him up Corkers or you'll end up with two holes in your neck and looking like you've just been slid out of the undertaker's freezer.

You've sold at least one copy. The sad thing is, Ive even wrapped it up for myself for Christmas and wrote the lable with my wife and daughter's names on, and I paid for it. It will at least match "Practical Pole Fishing" by two authors that have made millions.

Millions if counted in Zimbabwe dollars. We hope you enjoy the carp book as much as we enjoyed writing and doing the photography for it, and good to see someone who 'saves' a Christmas present until the actual day. I like to do that with books - nice to have something to look forward to.

Got mine today too, and I've already read half of it! At last, a book that doesn't talk down to you and isn't full of chapters about rigs and bait. and you won't believe this, it's got loads of pictures in it that aren't just trophy shots, actual scenes and playing and other stuff. Some pictures are truly atmospheric. Where's me carp gear!:o
